'Tis interesting how close he got to escaping back to France. According to the timeline in this story, the incident took place about noon, he checked out at 12:28, and had lunch with his daughter Camille. Then he proceeded to JFK, where he missed his cell phone. He called the hotel and asked if he'd left it. They said, yes, and asked if he'd like them to send someone to deliver it to him at the airport. He said, please, and they sent the Port Authority Police, who grabbed him with about ten minutes to spare.

It's beginning to sound like he didn't know how much trouble he was in. If he hadn't called the hotel looking for his phone, he probably would have got away.

So he aggressively attacked this woman, then stopped to have lunch with his daughter, then called back to the scene of the crime from the airport (revealing his location) asking to have his cellphone delivered?

That scenario might suggest that he didn't even know anything was up; if you've raped someone in a foreign country, do you stop for lunch with your daughter, or would you get the first flight you could find out of the U.S. and to hell with the cell phone? Doesn't sound right to me.

Not defending the womanizing eurotrash, but something's not adding up.

Why should he have been worried? He’d done this before and never gotten punished for it. I’m sure there are maids all over the world who have gotten a handful of cash from this guy to “put some ice on it.”

The journalist he attacked after an interview a few years ago talked about it but didn’t file charges against him (because they were both Socialists).

What happened here is that he picked the wrong victim...and he ran into the NYPD. Sometimes they’re negligent and awful, but most of the time, the NYPD is right on target, and it doesn’t matter to them if you are the world’s most powerful socialist.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised. Rape first, throw cash at her afterward might be his usual. If so . . . what a pig.

The other thought I’m having is that he might try to get sympathy by claiming mental illness. Manic/depressive cycle that makes him sex-crazed when he’s manic, or who knows whatever else his doctors and lawyers might cobble together.

In any case, if he really did rape her (and it sure sounds to me like he did) then I hope he gets to sit in a cell for a long, long time.
