Media Matters Launches Campaign Urging Advertiser Boycott of Fox News Channel
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 5/18/2011 | Paul Bond

Glenn Beck, it turns out, was just a warm-up for Media Matters. This week, the progressive watchdog group launched a campaign targeting all companies that advertise on Beck's TV home, the Fox News Channel.

Headquarters for the campaign is a website called DropFox.com that was unveiled Monday. Front and center at the site is the group's first targeted advertiser: Orbitz Worldwide.

Next to the Orbitz logo on Wednesday was a photo of Beck above the tagline, "Buyer Beware: Why Advertisers Should Still Be Wary of Financially Supporting Fox News."

Click Beck's photo and it takes you to charts and data designed to show that a boycott of his TV show organized by Media Matters led to advertisers fleeing and Fox News ditching him, despite high ratings.

Orbitz is a target at DropFox because the online travel company has embraced lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, a community Media Matters says Fox News maligns.

Clicking the Orbitz logo takes visitors to a letter addressed to CEO Barney Harford that asks him to yank Orbitz ads from Fox News based in part on things hosts Bill O'Reilly and Mike Huckabee have allegedly said.

O'Reilly, according to the letter, has compared same-sex nuptials to people marrying turtles, ducks or dolphins, while Huckabee compared homosexuality to pedophilia and necrophilia.

The letter ends: "It is our sincere hope that you will rethink your decision to support (Fox News) financially through ad revenue."

Fox News didn't respond to requests for comment. Beck, though, on his Wednesday radio show belittled claims that large numbers of advertisers have abandoned him, noting that the Forbes Celebrity 100 list released Wednesday ranks him higher this year than it did last year.

Orbitz might as well learn there’s no pleasing these GLBT people, who are a very small crowd.

In a depression, advertisers will be grateful for any TV time and happily ignore the haters of capitalism. One hopes.

Um, huh? So Orbitz embraces the very crowd that probably make up most of MM, and MM responds with a boycott? So if you support Orbitz, you're supporting what? And if you boycott Orbitz, you're supporting what? Only one word describes this boycott. "FAIL".

Unfortunately for media matters, while some advertisers may easily scare at first, at the end of the day, they want one thing: eyeballs. As long as Fox does not go down the terlet, they will still have them.

“lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, a community Media Matters says Fox News maligns.”

What a lie - FNC doesn’t malign that (or any other) community - Shep Smith has a twice-daily show, doesn’t he?

‘my bad :-)))

IIRC, FOX has more viewers then all the Marxist networks put together.
I use to see the figures on Drudge, but I do not see them now.

I think the advertisers are going to advertise where they have the most viewers.

“while Huckabee compared homosexuality to pedophilia and necrophilia”

All three used to be lumped under the general label of “paraphilias” in the diagnostic bible of psychiatrists.

What’s the problem?

Just become a bunch of queers fought to have it ‘omitted’ doesn’t mean it isn’t still valid.

It still IS an aberrant sexual deviation/attraction, same as the others.

If the condition really is genetic, as we're told, then wouldn't homosexuality qualify as a "birth defect"?

Yup.

Let’s see how the libs would view “defective” fetuses like Trig Plain, then.

[or are some ‘defects’ more equal than others?]

Yes, advertisers look at the demographic and put their money where they can achieve the broadest reach among specific demographics.

This flap over the Glen Beck boycott was pure twaddle because most on the list were consumer products/food/cosmetics that hadn’t advertised on Beck in the first place.

Chicago based politics written large.

The liberal/progressive/socialist sector abandoned any rational response to their opponents a long time ago. I would suggest that it started in the mid to late 1960s with their protesting the Vietnam War.

Since then they have refined the procedure to the point that you can almost predict their actions months in advance.

Our liberal/progressive/socialist sector can only succeed if they can shut off all debate on any subject. The first debate that they lose will unleash a flood tide of other debates and losses.

Proof of statement?

Look at the increase in the number of state legislatures considering restricting public union bargaining to just salaries once Wisconsin passed their law.

I fully expect for that concept to spread to other issues as we move closer to and pass the 2012 elections.
