Tom Coburn to Gingrich: If you can’t offer a Medicare plan better than Ryan’s, keep your mouth shut

I want to call this a palate cleanser, but it’s so acidic — especially his memory of the sign in Newt’s office on the Hill — that it’s more likely to burn your tongue. Can’t use it as evidence of the upswell in conservative anger towards Newt after his MTP appearance either, I’m afraid: Coburn is a Gingrich critic of loooongstanding, which makes this less of a standard “what happened to Newt?” lament than a bitter “I told you so.” To follow up on an earlier analogy, it’s as if Coburn jumped into the ring, pushed Drago aside, and started punching Apollo in the face himself. Brutal — yet amazing.

He’d be pleased to know, I think, that Nancy Pelosi and the left are willing to meet his challenge and produce a plan of their very own. That plan: Ruinous complacency followed by bankruptcy and fiscal catastrophe. Gosh, I hope she gets to be Speaker again someday.

Me to Coburn IF you cannot stop spending without raising taxes practice what you preach. NOT a defense of Newt, but Newt is in NO position to raise taxes.

Just my two cents:

I was in college when Newt was Speaker. I was busy getting drunk & laid, and not paying any attention to politics. However, then and afterward, I was given to understand that Newt was nearly the definition of conservatism in a politician. Until the last 5 to 10 years, I was not in a position to say for mywelf whether he was, or wasn't, "conservative".

Since I've become more politically aware, and more clear about what conservatism is, and isn't; I have not heard Newt say a damned thing that would lead me to believe he is conservative in any way. On the other hand, I've heard much from him that sounds in no way different from what a hardcore leftist might say.

If he says something that I agree with, something "conservative" ; it is guaranteed to be the worst kind of pap, pablum, and pandering.

In short, Newt's a schmuck.

That’s because he quit saying a whole lot of conservative things shortly after he became Speaker. It may be hard to believe, but he really was a brilliant conservative before that. WAS being the operative word.

Forgive me for asking, but why the hell did Ryan have to introduce ANY Medicare plan in 2011, when the GOP does not have a chance of enacting it? Did we fight so hard to retake the House just so Ryan could give the Democrats and Obama an issue to demagogue with Seniors next year? Why couldn’t this wait? Then we could have just run against Obama’s spending, gas prices, high unemployment, etc., without this useless distraction.

I wish that excerpt had been written in English.
Who writes crap like that? What's a Tom Coburn? Who cares?

Cicero Grimes, meet John Russell. Coburn can often more than match Newt when it comes to jumping the shark.
