SAN ANTONIO-It's been tried before over the years, but it never happened. Changing the name of Durango Boulevard to Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. The change to honor the late civil rights leader would affect Durango from Interstate 37 here in downtown to 36th street to the west.
It would cost the city roughly 100-thousand dollars to make the changes. The issue was put on the fast track by councilman Philip Cortez of district 4--one of four districts that would be affected. But the cost goes beyond just changing street signs.
It's been called Durango since the 1880s. But this street and all the people and businesses along it, may find themselves with a whole new address.
Jamie Martinez is with the Cesar Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation. He knew the civil rights leader and supports the change. "Right now the city, we have support and it's going to happen. We have spent 100s of thousands of dollars for parks. I believe it's time he is recognized in our city."...

They changed Brooklyn Avenue here in LA to Cesar Chavez a long time ago. still don’t like it.

I ran the advertising for a winery in California back in the late sixties-early seventies.
As a consequence, my advertising agency got picketed, our ads on the Dick Cavett Show got disrupted and I got shot at.
So, no, I don't hold a high opinion of Sr. Chavez.
But I wonder why the La Raza Latinos do -- since Chavez was among the biggest (and most effective) enemies of illegal immigration.

Che Guevara was indeed the archetypal murdering mercenary and I was too strong in my comments about Chavez.
I hope I would never mix the two - and shouldn’t have said that Chavez enjoyed killing.
However, I can remember hearing real-time stories back in the 60’s and 70’s about violence associated with those “non-violent” strikes and boycotts. His movement left me with a dislike of all strikes and suspicion of boycotts.
He already has a garbage scow named after him.

Actually Caesar Chavez worked to get rid not only of illegal immigration, but also to rid us of the Bracero program.
I knew Jaime (not Jamie) Martinez when he was a Chief Steward for the IUE at Friedrich Refrigeration back in the early 70’s. He was an idiot then and the old adage once an idiot, always an idiot still applies.
He once called me Hitler for making some of his union trash slackers work and I embarrassed his @$$ by having a guard physically removing him from the department. He never f**ked with me again after that.
I ate so much iceberg lettuce during Chavez BS boycott, that I now strongly prefer Romaine.
The City Council Vote was along ethnic lines. The Latinos had more votes than the rest of the council.
That said, I think the estimated cost to San Antonio is being downplayed. What about the man hours involved with changing deeds, property descriptions, appraisal district stuff from Durango to Cesar Chavez. The cost will be more than just the street signs.
When is this kind of irresponsibility with taxpayer funds ever going to stop? We cannot afford to be doing this kind of thing anymore! Durango Street is swathed in history and is an icon in this city that is well recognized. Spending hundreds of thousands of dollars just so that one council member can make a misguided legacy for himself and glorify one individual is about as ridiculous as it gets. Enough is enough!
Some of us have been under the delusion that the role of government (at least in the United States of America) is to manage, streamline, and administrate services for the common good of the public in order to make American lives easier. That requires fiscal responsibility and restraint on the part of our elected officials, proper administration of taxpayer funds (put tax dollars toward specific needed purposes, as originally intended, and NOT divert them toward other frivolous pet causes), ability to prioritize services that are actually NECESSARY for the good of the public in general, competence and utilization of sound judgment, ability to follow proper procedure, and generally not to interfere with, intrude on, and disrupt the lives of the very people who are paying for these kinds of atrocious government expenditures.
Apparently San Antonio City Council members have become confused as to their job roles. And I dare say Caesar Chavez, himself, would not have approved of this lunacy!
If the City of San Antonio has this much discretionary income lying around and this much TIME to waste worrying about renaming streets, how about this for a novel idea: Return the funds to the taxpayers! Some of us are doing well to put food on the table every day just to feed our families.
For those who want to honor Caesar Chavez, go right ahead! No one is stopping you. Use your own resources to do whatever you want, when you want, on your own time. But don’t take our hard-earned tax dollars and infringe on the lives of every person living and/or doing business on Durango Street just to satisfy personal causes that are not critically necessary and do not serve to benefit the public as a whole. And don’t EVER shamefully complain again to the citizens of San Antonio that you don’t have enough money to take care of legitimate and necessary city business.
