Popular Fourth of July Fireworks Show Canned By Budget Woes - Los Angeles
KTLA-TV ^ | May 23, 2011 | KTLA News

The skies over Marina Del Rey will be dark this Fourth of July after budget issues forced the cancellation of its popular fireworks display.

Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors announced on their website Monday that the annual fireworks show will not be active due to "budget curtailments."

The show has been a popular draw for the seaside community, bringing thousands and snarling traffic near the Fisherman's Wharf tourist stop and channel-area beaches.

The department still encouraged locals to visit the city, reminding that "hotels, restaurants, retailers and local attractions will be open, parks and beaches are popular, and it will be a great day to get out on the water for fishing, boating and cruising."

With all due respect....no city should be spending tax payers monies on fire works.

Period.

Good. It is about time that EVERYONE sacrifice for this budget disaster.

So...when California wants you to bail them out...for their failures...they can count on you?

Excellent!!

Can't afford sky-rockets, but can afford to pay some life guards over $100,000 a year?

I thought that was Orange County, not the city of LA.

Can’t say I disagree with a local government, in hard times, NOT spending millions on a fireworks show. But ...

but I’ll bet there are many expenditures going UNcut that I would have cut even sooner than the fireworks displays.

And, as ever in this neck of the woods, one wonders how much of the available money is made UNavailable due to illegal aliens: extra burdens on public roads, schools, public services, welfare!!, etc.

Wow. California is cutting and you are saying that is not good. Are you sure that you should be here?

Tucson couldn’t afford ours a couple of years ago, Jim Click rallied some other businesses to pay for it. Jim is a loud mouth and often annoying, but he never misses a chance for good PR, and he has business interests in the greater LA area. Somebody should give him a call.

Thanks Beaten Valve. At least the prisons won’t be crowded on the 4th. Morgues probably will be though.

Budget woes.

I heard it was because at last year’s show the PA announcer would scream IMMIGRATION ever time something exploded and too many got hurt in the stampede...

Government has no business being involved or funding “shows” or celebrations. Mismanaged government can’t even deal with simple budgets or securing the borders.

Enough!

I agree it is enough.

For me, it was enough a ways back.

The crappy part is that you and I are the ones really doing all the funding.

There is a show “Gettysburg” upcoming on the History channel.

They bill it with “Two armies went in, in three days, one nation came out”.

There are a lot of brain dead, gutless, crybabies in this country who can’t or won’t understand what it takes for one nation to come out.

Some people on this forum say inane things. Resort to slick humor.

Maybe that is just their way of walking lightly.

The only problem is the city won’t let the private citizen have fireworks! PS. I live in Torrance.
