US Green-Lights Prosecution for of John Edwards for Alleged Campaign Law Violations
ABC News ^ | May 24, 2011 | James Hill

The United States Department of Justice has green-lighted the prosecution of former presidential candidate John Edwards for alleged violations of campaign laws while he tried to cover up an extra-marital affair, ABC News has learned.

A source close to the case said Edwards is aware that the government intends to seek an indictment and that the former senator from North Carolina is now considering his limited options. He could accept a plea bargain with prosecutors or face a potentially costly trial.

Edwards has been the focus of a lengthy federal investigation focusing on hundreds of thousands of dollars allegedly provided by two wealthy supporters. The government will contend those were illegal donations that ultimately went to support and seclude his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Hunter was a campaign videographer with whom Edwards had a lengthy affair that resulted in a daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, now three years old.

If the case were to proceed to trial, legal experts said, the government would have to prove that the intent of the donations was to cover-up the affair so that Edwards could continue his pursuit of the 2008 Democratic nomination for president.

The government's case against Edwards is expected to rely heavily on Andrew Young, a former close aide to Edwards who falsely claimed paternity of Hunter's child three weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

Young testified before a grand jury for nine hours in 2009, and also wrote a tell-all book that alleged Edwards was the mastermind of a well-funded, well-orchestrated plan to keep the affair from becoming public.

Edwards acknowledged paternity of the child last year, but has steadfastly maintained that he has broken no laws.

This is booby bait. Who cares about Edwards? So he paid some campaign cash to his bedwarmer. Obama ran wild on election laws,, he took *massive* foreign donations, including bundles donations from Palestinians and Saudis. Call me when we can look into that,,,,

How many years has it taken to get around to charging this creep with a crime?

This whole thing ‘smells’ a little funny.

As scummy as Edwards may be, proving this is kind of like trying to pin the tail on the Jell-o salad.

This was gift money that wasn’t even reported as campaign contributions. If he did report it as campaign contributions then giving it to his secret sweetheart would be a legal abuse of the funds, I’d think. So can a campaigning politician legally receive gifts and use them upon things that would not be legal campaign expenditures?

It’s other liberal sleaze bags that are trying to prosecute him, and it seems that any strict construal of the law may be out the window here.

It is unfair to do this to him.
He WAS ‘father of the year’ when this happened.

As much as I would love to see every medical-malpractice trail lawyer / slimy two-faced politician turned into someone's prison bitch ... if this Justice Department is driving it, it's a political move and any outcome will have nothing to do with prosecution for laws broken and everything to do with political games.

Just another way to demean fathers and destroy the concept of marriage in the eyes of the masses...placing such a creep as Father of the Year.

They probably knew exactly what kind of creep he was at that time. It was no secret to the press and that video of him preening in a mirror is such a metrosexual ugly thing.

And, let’s not forget that Edwards is NOT one of Holder’s “people.”

alleged violations of campaign laws...

Probably guilty on a charge of excess primping as well; should add that to the total prison time.

FOTY according to what, Time? Sounds like it’s Time that got punked for insufficient research — it’s not as if affairs like this are that exceedingly rare (unfortunately).

Prosecute the SOB. Even if you don't get a conviction you will cost the ambulance chaser boo koo dollars. That would be fitting since he made his money suing hospitals.

If pretty boy gets convicted then he better get several years supply of soap-on-a-rope. bend over red rover. . . .
