Postal worker who defecated in yard gets to keep his job

PORTLAND, Ore. - A mail carrier who was caught using a yard as his personal toilet will not be fired.

The incident happened last month at a home in southeast Portland and a neighbor, Don Derfler, captured the man in the act with his camera.

Derfler had been waiting for his babysitter when he saw his mailman acting odd at his neighbor's house across the street. The postal worker then pulled down his pants and that's when Derfler began snapping pictures.

"We trust people like the postal service and meter readers and people of that nature," Derfler told us when we interviewed him in April. "To come on to our property and to defecate - it's just wrong."

The incident was an embarrassment to the post office and the worker was immediately placed on unpaid leave. Now, a decision has been made to keep the worker but he will be transferred to a different route.

A spokesperson said the administrative action was taken based on a postal service investigation but he did not elaborate. He also did not say which route the mail carrier has been assigned to cover.

Yeesh. Gives “junk mail” a whole new meaning.

We live way out in the country. I’m pretty well convinced that one day when we were gone our rural mail carrier came in and used the bathroom. - Funny, but I don’t care really. In fact, I’d have told her to come on in any time she needed to when she was on her route (I had known her for a long time.) I know what it’s like to have your bladder busting and no restroom for miles around. We’ve got nothing of value in the house, and nothing to hide. Early on, I decided to cultivate simplifying life and having nothing worth stealing in our house; and we don’t.

I’m sure that he had bundles of junk mail newsprint handouts in his bag to totally wipe himself, before continuing on his route whilst whistling happy tunes!

In the old days, when you knew your neighbors, the mailman, the Good Humor man, and the bread/milk delivery man, if they needed to go to the bathroom, someone always let them in.

That’s what we were as a society. Look at what the Democrats have done to divide it into distrusting factions.

We need to get back to “niceness” and “decency.”

No way he should get to keep his job. He should be charged.

Could be something he ate and he had no control and had no choice.

Probably more involved than indicated in article. I know from personal experience no matter where one is, a urgent call of nature will not be denied.

Will never forget my embarrassment on a very, very, cold still January day in 1956. I was a 17 year old in basic training at Ft. Leonardwood MO and we had been on a forced March. Then back at the company area, were made to stand at attention in the ranks. This while some 2nd Louie idiot addressing the troops prattled on and on. I had to urinate so bad there was no stopping it, and the steam rising up from my wet pants for all to see was not my finest moment.

any one that has had an uncontrollable bout of diarrhea can sympathize. But should have gone to the back yard...

...I told her I was reliving myself on the same lawn that our 2 cats, a dog and probably a dozen wild animals piss on each day, yet none of them pay the mortgage...so forgive me for feeling a sense of entitlement to mark my territory from time to time.

Well, we live on 40 acres out in the country. When we first bought the property my wife suggested that we get an outhouse for the far end so that if I was working down there I wouldn't have to come all the way back to the house. I explained that no guy who has 40 acres of woods needs an outhouse...

Fast forward a few years and I have read a lot about marking your territory. It turns out that we have coyotes, and mountain lions, along with coons and skunks. All of these guys can smell your urine and tell that a large carnivore left that mark. Now I am fairly regular at marking my territory to keep the larger predators down.

Seriously, I’ve wondered what they did when they had to “go”. Guess there wasn’t a gas station nearby?

In short order a young family friend and a nephew went into the military. Reflecting on my own service I told them to NEVER pass up the opportunity to hit the head (go to the latrine). That's because YOU NEVER KNOW when you'll be there again.

They report that continues to be good advice.

I agree with you. What everyone fails to understand is the man didn’t do this with malicious intent. He had problems and had to go now. I’m glad he kept his job. The real jerk in this story was the AH who videoed this. Instead of seeing if the man needed help he was more interested in filming and calling someone about it. I’ll bet he got his butt kicked a lot as a child. One of those always running and tattling to the teacher.

Kudos to you Mad Max. You’re a good person and undoubtedly a good neighbor.

Seriously, I think the vast overwhelming majority of the critics in this case are constipated so often they really can't imagine the alternatives!

For them every dump is a major time consuming effort that requires a great deal of concentration. Little do they imagine what happens to the other end of the defacatory cycle, nor can they

already well covered in this only slightly older thread. Again, I do pray that all the critics be stricken with chron’s disease, celiac, wheat gluten intolerance or any number of other normal, natural, very destructive problems of the upper and lower GI. BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES in everybody’s front yard.

Stay classy muawiyah!

Why did I know you'd like that one.

BTW, that BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES expression is ordinarily used in a totally different environment, but the principle is the same.

What God do you pray this to? It cannot be the same God that most FReepers pray to.

Why the one true God ~ in Heaven ~ the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ~ to start with.

Do you imagine that an individual carrying out the dictates of the US Constitution (see: post offices and post roads clause) should be subjected to abuse over a bowel movement?

The Conservative GOD created bowel movements.

So this God will strike down others at your request because you crap in your pants?

Definitely a different God.

Further, asking God to share your problems is not very Christian either. I have arthritis but I don’t sit around praying that others get it too just so they know how it feels.

That would be a really crappy thing to do.
