....Epic snowpack in parts of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and California is forcing many tourists to abandon the annual rites of launching their summer holidays with a camping trip. Others plan to take advantage of prolonged skiing and showshoeing this strange spring.
In Denver, Brooke Schmidgall had her sights set on high-country camping this weekend as she shopped for gear at a sporting goods store.
"I'll bring my snowshoes," she said. "We have a big family tent. It will be nice and warm."
Rocky Mountain National Park's popular Trail Ridge Road is closed because of 17-foot snow drifts. Normally, holiday motorists can cruise at altitudes surpassing 11,000 feet but not this year.
Janelle Smith, spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service's Rocky Mountain region, recommended that campers consider heading to lower elevations - like Arizona or New Mexico. Campers in Idaho were being warned to check first before heading to camping areas - or risk being turned back by lingering drifts or muddy, impassable roads.
In Oregon, some resorts were still trying to dig out cabins - let alone campgrounds - from snowpack.
Yellowstone National Park has just one campground open. "We're telling people to be prepared for snow," said park spokesman Al Nash
In other parts of Wyoming, officials have extended winter closures of wildlife management areas to campers. The reason: To protect wildlife from humans because animals are still searching for food at lower elevations.
The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center is fully staffed to warn outdoors enthusiasts.
"May snow depths are deeper than anything we have seen in the last 45 years," said avalanche center spokesman Bob Comey...

Global Warming anyone?

Damn global warming!!
Al Gore’s a Big Lummox!
Why is a paper in Fla. concerned with w/e weather and conditions in the Rockies?
I guess it’s a community public service article: “Take your coats!”
Because it's news?
However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become a very rare and exciting event.
Children just arent going to know what snow is, he said.
Yeah, it’s news. I’m planning 100 miles hiking at 10,000 ft. plus week 3 - 4 of July and am nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof. I’m hoping for a big June melt or I’m totally hosed.
Liberals lie.
Interviewer: As a Nobel Laureate, how to you explain this years snow pack this late in May?
Al Gore: These unprecedented snowpacks are a direct result of global warming because warm air holds more moisture and more mositure mean big pretty snowflakes and big pretty snowflakes mean more snow. I know this because when I was in college, I took a course to fullfill my science requirement called “The Earth and You.” I got a D. It was a very hard course.”
Interviewer: You used the word “unprecedented.” But according to Bob Comey, spokesperson for the Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center, “May snow depths are deeper than anything we have seen in the last 45 years.” If we experienced similar snow depths 45 years ago, then doesn’t that suggest that the current snow depths are cyclical, rather than the result of global warming?
Al Gore: 45 years ago? Really? I can’t answer your question because at the time, I was only 18 years old and hadn’t even taken any college science courses yet. But I did have a blue bicyclical. I like bicyclicals. Bicyclicals are fun. I also like popcyclicals. Does anyone have a popcyclical?
It would be a good weekend for Al Gore to do some high-country camping and hiking.
Turns out it’s an AP story. Global circulation.
I hear we have 200% snowpack up above us. And it snowed some more a couple of days ago. Got 36 degrees right now. They are running more water out of Palisades reservoir than I’ve seen and it is still filling.
At least we don’t have tornadoes.
This weekend is traditionally opening weekend for our campgrounds in the Sierra. We’ll be lucky at this point to be in there before July 4.
The children wont even know what snow is
(shakes lowered head in mawkish fakeumentary way that Michael Moore does when trying to elicit sympathy for his Leftist point of view)
In the High Sierra of California there is still 10+ feet of snow on the trails above 10,000 feet. I try to expalin this to flatlander tourists who come to go hiking in shorts and flip flops and they just don't understand; they say "How can that be? Winter is over!" I tell them Spring has barely begun up in the mountains.
The Earth has a fever, and only Al Gore and large amounts of cash can cure it!
We need to take back some of Al Gores money so that the snow will stop.
Of COURSE it’s “global warming”... er... “climate change”.
It causes unusual weather of all kinds - unusually heavy rains and droughts, extreme heat and cold, unusually heavy snowfall and unusual lack of snowfall.
It’s “SCIENCE”, so if you are skeptical, you’re “scientifically illiterate”.

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called
