Texas to require photo identification from voters

(Reuters) - Texas Governor Rick Perry on Friday ceremonially signed a bill making Texas the twelfth state to require photo identification from voters.

"Today we take a major step forward in ensuring the integrity of our electoral process in Texas, a major step protecting the most cherished right that we enjoy as a people," Perry, joined by lawmakers who supported the legislation, told reporters.

The measure was one of the Republican governor's "emergency" legislative priorities for the session, and he's not alone. Republicans across the country are pushing such legislation. This year, more than 30 states have considered adding or strengthening voter identification requirements, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Photo ID requirements were signed into law in Wisconsin this week and in South Carolina earlier this month. Kansas also passed a photo ID measure this year that goes into effect January 1.

The requirement is already in place in Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan and South Dakota. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton on Thursday vetoed a photo identification bill.

Any bets that the GOP will fare 4-5% better than before? Can we check the voters for individuals with warrents out against them?

I suggest that every Texan thank the poll worker who asks for your ID on election day.

Just say “thanks for checking my ID.”

We had a woman protest Voter ID here in Nevada during one of our State Central Committee meetings. She was all over the "what if you don't have an ID?" and "my child doesn't even have a birth certificate"... She said it was against her religion.

During a break someone asked her about her religion and she said she was Wiccan and they are forbidden to carry photo identification. I meant to look that up - I'll do it now.

It will be interesting to see this work for the first election or two. I’ve used my drivers license as my means of voting for several years now. I just hand it to the clerk and if it matches the voter role info as it does they then let me vote.

I think Amish and Mennonites can't have photo IDs and these bills usually have exceptions for such religious groups.

I'm not aware of any such prohibition for Wiccans but they're not really formalized.

Fake voters were supposed to be the reason that Sanchez beat out Bob Dornan.

Heck even queen sheila may have a tougher time.

Gotta know those with lots of “outstandings” will be less likely to show some gubmint official their DL.

You would think that people who call themselves democrats would be the first ones to stand up to defend a fair and verifiable democratic voting process. But no, they are dead set against any reforms.

We all know why. They’ve been rigging elections for so long now that they think it’s a right.

Not only should that happen in every state, only land owners should be able to vote too. That would piss the libs and blood suckers off.

Awesome! Now if we can keep the snowbirds from voting 2 times...once in
their home state and down here when they come for the winter.

This is historic. I hope all “56” states can get on board!
