Former presidential candidate John Edwards and federal prosecutors are arguing over whether funds used to cover up his extramarital affair were campaign contributions or just gifts from his longtime friends.
An indictment of the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee appeared near, but some people on both sides were still hoping Tuesday for a last-minute deal for Edwards to plead guilty to a negotiated charge.
So far Edwards has refused to admit to felony charges that would likely cost him his law license, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations who spoke on a condition of anonymity because they are supposed to be private.

Edwards is fighting to save his Law License, just as Bubba did a few short years ago!
Yet we are told to believe that Mrs. HUSSEIN voluntarily turned in her Law License only Five short years after she finally got it after failing the Bar at least once!!
And then for the “Piece de Resistence! We are told that Obama HUSSEIN voluntarily gave up his Law License during the Campaign because he “ouldn’t need it anymore and it just cost to much to maintain!!!”
Bullcrap!! He Lied on His Bar Application when he said he never used any alias except Barack Hussein Obama! He most probably is still Legally Barry Soetoro which he bacame legally when he was adopted by his Indonesian Stepfather so long ago!
The Obamas(Soetoros,Who Really knows!) have Made a Mockery of Our AMERICA and Our Constitution along with the Demorat Party assisting in their Treasonous Actions!
As slimey a person as Edwards is, if the money never went into the campaign, I don’t see a campaign finance related crime.
While the exposure of the affair would have affected his campaign in a very negative way, this is no different than other politicians, or even non-politicians, who have paid off the mothers of their illegitimate children in exchange for silence.
Where is the crime if friends of Edwards gave money to this woman unless there was some sort of quid pro quo?
I’d like to see Edwards go to prison for being a scumbag, but that is not a crime.
If the Picklebrain and her cohorts had her way, Edwards would be President today.

Isn’t that POS worth over $100 million? Cheap bastard used campaign funds instead of his personal money.
Maybe he felt he had to, to keep the transaction(s) hidden from possibility of spousal discovery.
The article does not mention that campaign money was used; just that friends made payments to other people. That is assuming the AP is reporting accurately; a big potential ‘if’.
On the other hand, why would Edwards be considering a deal if he did nothing wrong, unless he might be concerned about being convicted of a non-existant crime? That sort of thing goes on all the time.
With as much money as he has, I’ll bet that he has multiple checking accounts. I still think he is a cheap bastard, just like most Rats, and he wanted to get someone else to pay for his extramarital affair.
