Does Disease Cause Autocracy?

New studies say that lowering the rate of infection helps lead to political liberalization.

Greater wealth strongly correlates with property rights, the rule of law, more education, the liberation of women, a free press, and more social tolerance. The enduring puzzle for political scientists is how do the social processes that produce freedom and wealth get started in the first place?

Many political theorists have associated democracy with the rise of wealth and the establishment of a large middle class. As Ronald Inglehart, a political scientist at the University of Michigan, and Christian Welzel, a political scientist at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany explain in the 2009 edited volume Democratization, “Growing resources are conducive to the rise of emancipative values that emphasize self-expression; and these values are conducive to the collective actions that lead to democratization.”

A group of researchers led by Harvard University economist Jeffrey Sachs recently noted that a billion people live on less than a dollar per day [PDF] and “are roughly as poor today as their ancestors were thousands of years ago.” Why? The researchers suggest that high disease burdens create persistent poverty traps from which poor people cannot extricate themselves. High disease incidence lowers their economic productivity so that they can’t afford to create the resources needed to improve sanitation and medical care, which in turn leaves them vulnerable to more disease. And so it goes.

University of New Mexico anthropologists Randy Thornhill and Corey Fincher pushed the disease thesis further with their “parasite hypothesis of democratization,” arguing that disease not only keeps people poor, but it also makes them illiberal. The two researchers test this hypothesis “using publicly available data measuring democratization, collectivism–individualism, gender egalitarianism, property rights, sexual restrictiveness, and parasite prevalence across many countries of the world.” The idea is that the lower...

I am no longer amazed at the echo chamber generated by our intellectual elite. Of course they believe greater health promotes greater sexual license. Except, of course, it does not. Conservatism, not liberalism produces healthy living. Disease is reduced when liberalism is diminished. Liberalism is, after all, a mental disease.

Every time we come near a "cure" for malaria (or a way of destroying mosquitos that carry it) Liberals always jump in the way.

They really didn't want DDT helping the world's poor to live better lives free of malaria (for example).

There are probably still some of them around who think draining the swamps near Philadelphia was a bad idea.

The latest is their belief that the honey bee shortage can be dealt with by breeding more vegetarian mosquitos.

I’ve given this a lot of thought, and I think that I know the cause of the avalanche of leftists in society.

Over the years, the capitalist system has allowed families to accumulate more and more, while at the same time, allowing additional free time. This additional free time has led to people being able to work less, yet keep a comfortable life-style. That’s led to spending more time in school, learning “skills” that will never get them jobs in the real world, taught by people who haven’t the skills or ability to get jobs in the real world.

At the same time, the type of work by many has gotten easier, where there’s far less physical danger. And with the inherent parenting wish to protect the young from danger, we’ve seen more and more parents insulating their children from EVERY danger. Little kids no longer stick things into electrical outlets, or give any thought to traffic when playing outside. Historically, parents taught children to look both ways before running out into the street, but no more. The little brats are told by their parents that drivers would never dare run over their little darlings.

Those kids, who believe that it’s their right to play in the street, traffic be damned, manage to survive and grow up to find other booger eating morons with whom they breed, leading to an even dumber and more liberal generation.

Interestingly enough the males don't suck blood ~ that's just the females. Instead the males flit about sucking nectar and juices from plants (which allows them to carry pollen from one plant to another).

Here's the problem ~ killing mosquitoes in urban areas is not exactly something that can be sex specific, nor even species specific.

Just another clumsy attempt by materialists to explain phenomena. The thesis is easily falsifiable.

Well, we all know you can’t get males without females, or vise-versa.

The homos have been trying to do it for millenia :o)

Or you can get raw with these strings. Either way, the violin is sweet yet lethal.

Do it!

If they are playing in the street and sticking things into electrical sockets, how many of them can survive to reproduce? Wouldn’t you *prefer* thatthe children of Liberals dir in accidents, and the properl-raised children of Conservatives survive?

It almost sounds as if you’re saying that we should make sure that people don’t profit from their labor by getting more free time, lest they become Liberals. The capitalist system seems to have the seed of its own destruction in it, if it permits people to have more free time - and that free time inexorably leads to non-productive activities. For the Capitalist system to keep raising Conservatives, it should keep most people working all the time, AND make sure that their education teaches them that it is the only way for a civilized society to remain profitable.

In addition, limit education to “learning ‘skills’ that will ... get them jobs in the real world,” and not the other impractical ones. Get rid of useless things like literature, art, philosophy, and the other useless liberal arts. Even science that serves no earthly purpose - like astrophysics, archaeology, and paleography - shouldn’t be taught, since it makes dreamers instead of practical doers.

Have you got a suggestion for how to eradicate children’s love of stories and fairytales? How about for crushing people’s interest in poetry and romance? The “love of nature” that some people claim to feel simply gets in the way of developing natural resources; that better be stomped out, as well. There are so many impulses that can lead to leftism. How can we get rid of them all?

Chemistry and Biology are among the Liberal Arts. You suppress that knowledge you’ll run out of medical doctors.

Feel free to do so, as well as the TLA (Three Letter Acronym) "BEM" (not to be confused with "Bug Eyed Monster").

It's a line that cropped up at a place I worked many years ago, and to this day, nobody was sure exactly who came up with it. But I took credit!
