I admit that when five of the Republican candidates for president appeared at their lecterns in the first televised debate of the season, I said to myself, oh no. Not another black guy. We’ve already been snookered into electing the first black president who has turned out to be a total flop at managing the country.
I watched the entire debate, however, and by the time it was over, I was convinced we should have waited and made this guy our first black president. We should have withheld the honor until a black candidate appeared whose job application showed him ready, willing and able to take the reins.
Herman Cain is his name. He is 65 and has bona fides that include a masters degree at Purdue and years of CEO experience pulling Burger King Restaurants out of the hole and rescuing Godfather Pizza from going bankrupt. He was head of the National Restaurant Association for years. Besides running for president, he has a talk show out of Atlanta.
He has never run for anything before but he wasn’t the least bit fazed by his co-candidates in the South Carolina debate, former Govs. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Gary Johnson of New Mexico, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.
“They have held public office before,” he told the audience. “How’s that working out for you?” The audience almost brought the house down.
Cain opposes gay marriage and abortion which should make him OK with the tea party folks. Like most Republicans, he wants to reduce the size of government. He’d swap the federal income tax for a consumption tax.
He didn’t hesitate to aim one at the incumbent either, saying of the recent disposal of Osama bin Laden, “One right decision does not a great president make.” And our wars?
He is still trying to figure out our mission in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said.
I was impressed that a Fox jury of voters after the S.C. debate revealed that not one of them had been a Cain supporter prior to it but afterward nearly all were sold on him.
Unlikely as it may seem right now, just think for a minute what a race would be like between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Herman Cain. Blacks would be the most torn of all, deciding whether they want charisma or experience.
Does Obama have too much of a head start with the wipeout of our most hated enemy for the last decade, Osama bin Laden? Obama is trying to take credit for being the brains of the whole thing, but the full story has not come out yet detailing exactly how much input he had, beyond the requirement that he give the OK.
As I hear it on the overnight talk shows, Lars Larson and Laura Ingraham, the Navy Seals were ready for weeks to go but the president couldn’t bring himself to give the signal. He is a born ditherer. Even at the brink of “go,” he told them give him overnight to think it over and he’d give them the word in the morning.
I think the delay was for a last minute check with his handlers since every move made now is to ensure reelection in 2012. One thing we’ve learned about Obama, he was created and is managed by a small covey of left-wingers. Actually, he was at the point he had to OK the effort or he’d suffer the same criticism launched at Bill Clinton when a similar raid was planned and CIA head Leon Panetta couldn’t get hold of the then president for the OK, the accusation that he was busy with Monica. By the time he was ready to answer the telephone, the window of opportunity had closed.
Clinton survived because he’s a skillful BSer. Obama’s BSing is written for him.

I think Obama still takes 95% of the African-American vote even against Cain.
Before Michael Steele’s tenure at the RNC, he ran against Ben Cardin for the Maryland U.S. Senate seat. When he was waiting in line at his polling place, he was roundly heckled by other African Americans. He lost overwhelmingly to Ben Cardin, who is white. I think Party trumps Race.
If he is the Republican nominee, Cain will have folks like this supporting his efforts:

I've noticed over here in Kandahar a decided dissatisfaction with Obama by Blacks.
I'm thinking more like 80-85% will vote Obama again.
It's the independents that will matter more.
My In-law’s, who have voted Democrat for the sake of voting Democrat, called my wife up and apologized for voting for Obama. If you knew them, you'd have been as shocked as I was.
I think there will be too many Democrats that honestly don't like him at this point and would be willing to make amends with there conscience by voting for another black president......namely West or Cain and/or Palin in the mix.
I think too many people are under estimating the damage Obama has done to the Democrats and some democrats will be willing to vote for a Republican Black President.
Regardless of my opinion on this, I would still be considering the three even if it wasn't Obama running again.
Of course this is all dependent upon a decent nominee for the GOP, of whom I can suggest at least four good people right now, including Herman.
The last time Republicans had the majority of African-American support was when African-Americans couldn't vote. It's the White-Guilt voters we want.
You are right, Obama gets 95% of the black vote in 2012. That’s a given. No matter who runs against him.
What is not a given is who gets the Independent vote. That’s what’s up for grabs and that’s what will determine the outcome.
I think that the die is cast already with 95% of the voters. It will come down, as always, to that swing. I do agree that “it’s the economy, stupid!” Right now I am fortunate in that I’m not working. Normally, I have about a 150 mile round-trip commute. When gas prices were last at $3.50/gallon, my credit card statement showed that I spent $900 in gas in ONE MONTH. Luckily, I was able to afford that, but it started to make me wonder why I worked! I also remember that the food prices were accordingly higher. I cannot imagine how this is hitting middle and lower class Americans.
At some point, people HAVE to realize that the drilling restrictions and weak dollar are inflating the price of oil. And that company profits are up, but no hiring, could that be because of the onus of Obamacare and other myriad regulations? All of these policies and decisions can be laid directly at the feet of this Administration. Surely (please God) the rank-and-file non-rabid-political-followers will see this?
Are those 5% swing voters going to get it this time? I love Sarah Palin, but I am afraid that the media overdrive on her will keep that 5% on the fence. I loathe Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum couldn’t keep his incumbent Senate seat. As far as declared candidates go, I like Cain. But I like West better (alas, probably not going to run, but a girl can dream).
I will offer that if you are in Kandahar, you have a rather self-selected group of people, either military or military contractors. I don’t think you can ever be overly liberal and choose to be in the military, so I think those minds are more easily changed. :)
Besides...we all know military votes don't count (or is that "aren't counted").
But I think that it could go either way, and Mr. Cain is a forceful enough straight-shooter that he might be able to pull it off, even though I think for many, party will trump race.

Interesting article, but a fair number of mistakes. I am also intrigued by this statement:

I’m a social conservative, AND a tea party type - and for the life of me, I remember the tea party being about reducing the size, scope and power of the Federal Government and a lot of secular libertarian types were also part of that movement. Can someone tell me when the tea party became Jim Dobson’s playground?

Barack Obama was elected to the Presidency for one reason--and only one reason: race.
His election exposes the basic, inherent racism of his supporters.
Their knee-jerk shout "RACISM!" in response to anything or anyone that questions or criticizes him, his words, his ideas, his policies, or anything about him proves the point.
The support and election to the Presidency of a man (or woman) who is QUALIFIED--regardless of race--reveals a concern for QUALIFICATION, and it also reveals the LACK OF RACISM of his supporters--and their LACK OF OBSESSION WITH RACE.
Anyone who would elect a man to the Presidency because of his race, is obviously racist and race-obsessed.
Those who would neither elect a man because of race nor refuse to elect a man because of race are obviously neither racist nor race-obsessed.
This is merely yet another observation that the mendacious Left IS eveyrhint that it accuses others or being.
He’d peel off a few votes...maybe 5%, but I agree, Obama would still get close to 90%. We’ve seen it time and again in races at the state level, even when the GOP runs and African American and the Dems run a white guy.
Panetta was never CIA director under Clinton.
