Before you whip out your credit card, pay pal, and “I helped the tornado victims” angst, take a deep breath, step back, and consider giving to charities that will ensure your hard earned money goes to the desperate victims, and not into some nebulous administrative fund for distant relief organizations.
For instance, the Salvation Army’s Commissioner Todd Bassett only draws a yearly salary of $13,000 (plus housing) for managing the $2 billion dollar organization, with 96% of donated dollars going directly to the victims, according to one email report I just received, albeit non attributable.
I have found the Army to be very responsible and sent my donation to Salvation Army, 1130 Hampton Ave., St. Louis, MO 63139-3147. In the memo line, write “Joplin Tornado Relief.”

The same email I received about the amount of donated money charities give directly to victims listed the American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans as drawing a yearly salary of $651,957, plus expenses.
The American Legion National Commander draws a ZERO salary, but the UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern is reported to draw a yearly salary of $1,200,000 plus ALL expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE!....

The Salvation Army and Convoy of Hope are my two fav charities, although Samaritan’s Purse seems good, too.
Convoy of Hope has the advantage of being an international relief organization based in Springfield, just an hour away from Joplin. They do both world-wide and local projects, and are having a fundraiser at Bass Pro today for Joplin.
Oh sorry, the fundraiser at the home store Bass Pro in Springfield is Thurs.
Shortly after 2001, I also found out that the San Diego head of the Red Cross was making in excess of $300,000.00 per year.
I’ll never donate a dime to the Red Cross again.
One thing I’ll say for the Salvation Army, I don’t see them advertising moments after a national disaster like the Red Cross does. As far as I am concerned, the Red Cross is the ambulance (disaster, if you will) chasing cause celeb.
The Red Cross also cons the networks into giving them free air-time and coning folks every time a national disaster takes place. I say coning, because if the Red Cross’ staff is being paid millions upon millions across this nation, then millions upon millions are not making it to the intended purposes or locations.
The Red Cross must have a staff set up to get the palms up in front of the American public, because hours after a disaster, their adds are everywhere.
Hey Red Cross, how about putting as much effort into disbursing funds and supplies to the victims. After 09/11, there was a lot of talk about how slow the Red Cross was at giving support to the families.
That was the last straw for me.
Agreed. I only give to the Salvation Army now.
The only charity he donated to? The Salvation Army.
He had a friend who had worked for the American Red Cross. The friend told him about the lavish holiday parties and other "perks" some of the ARC employees enjoyed. My co-worker decided to research various charities to see where the money actually went.
In his research, he found that the Salvation Army by far did the best job of actually getting donations to people who needed help. The percentage that went towards "administration costs" was much lower than for many other charities (I don't think Samaritan's Purse was in existence at that time).
He didn't care that the Army was Christian based, only that it seemed to do its best to really help people and not help itself to donors' money.
My dad(a WW II vet) had NOTHING good to say about the “Red” Cross.
