Chicago cancels July 4 fireworks, leaves shows to Navy Pier

Chicago cancels July 4 fireworks, leaves shows to Navy Pier Chicago is getting out of the Independence Day fireworks business.

There will be no city-run July 3rd or July 4th fireworks show this year — not even a scaled-down version — thanks to former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s decision to hand off the Taste of Chicago to the Park District to reverse $7 million in festival losses over the last three years.

That means Chicago’s only official fireworks will be the previously scheduled show at 9 p.m. July 4 at Navy Pier. That 15-minute show is paid for by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.

Chicago Park District spokesperson Jessica Maxey-Faulkner said the decision to cancel even last year’s smaller fireworks at three lakefront locations was a sacrifice demanded by the economic times.

There will still be a number of shows sponsored by other entities in the vicinity of Chicago, if not on the lakefront itself.

I wonder if a laser show would be cheaper.

They’ll have plenty of fireworks in certain Chicago neighborhoods.

Given 50% of male blacks are now unemployed under Obama, I suspect so.

That’s some “change” all right.

That's funny.

How long did it take Chicago to spend the $1.157 billion they got from Morgan Stanley in return to handing over the rights to every parking spot in the city for the next seventy-five years?

But Democrats are the smart ones. Uh-huh.

Only a little more than 74 years to go, Chicago. Hang in there.

San Diego may be doing the say but for an entirely different reason. A judge here has ruled the city must require EIRs (environment impact report) for fireworks shows. EIRs cost thousands and take months. It’s insane.

After last weekend at the beach, it's sad to say I agree with that.

Maybe the gangs will have a big shootout amongst themselves on the pier.

Clearly....too jingoistic to celebrate the 4th of july...

All this patriotism is unsettling for the libtards...

Maybe the locals can shoot their guns up in the air to celebrate like they do in some countries. Whoops, never mind, there are no guns in Chicago, because they are illegal to own.

They don’t want to cut back on their national advertsing campaign to recruit more homeless people.

The responses here are a little too casual. I find it disturbing that rahm does away with Chicago's premier patriotic event immediately after assuming office.

The budget? And no one thought of simply cutting back on the expense? Or having commercial and private donors, as a lot of small communities do?

This is an intentional erasure of American Patriotic Tradition! Wake Up People!!!
