Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is apparently telling associates he will run against Sen. Orrin Hatch in 2012

The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday in an above-the-fold A1 story that "five Utah politicos, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Chaffetz has told them directly in recent weeks that he will contend for the Republican (senate) nomination."

The story is attracting national attention, including pieces from Politico, MSNBC.com, UPI, and National Journal.

I do wish that Orrin Hatch would retire. He’s done many good things in the past, but it’s time for him to leave. He’s been there too long.

I’ll contribute to Mr Chaffetz’s campaign.

Yup. He should accept a gold watch and pat on the back and not force us to forcibly remove him.

I think Chaffetz might have a good chance of pulling a primary challenge off.

I don't know much about the Utah causus system works but I do know the Utah Tea Party is one of the most organized and got Mike Lee elected.

I love Chaffetz. This is great news. I hope he retires too. If he doesn’t, Jason make sure it happens against his will.

Chaffetz was a Utah co-chairman for Michael Dukakis’s 1988 campaign for U.S. President. His father had previously been married to Dukakis’ wife, Kitty. Yep.

Jason Chaffetz, former campaign manager for, and later Chief of Staff to, that’s right, Jon Huntsman, Jr. Obomo’s ambassador to Red China.

Not that I don’t like what he’s done so far... but he’s no Mike Lee. Hard for me to trust Obomo/China Jon’s left hand man too far. Let’s keep him in the house of commons another term. Six years is too long to trust in advance to this guy at this critical juncture, IMO. I’d rather see Hatch for another six years, and Hatch needs to be retired ASAP.

“If he doesn’t, Jason make sure it happens against his will.”

I’m sure he will, just ask Bennett. Hatch “I love Ted Kennedy” has got to go. So does much/most of the Utah State Legislature.

P.S. I’m not endorsing Chaffetz, I’ll wait until I see more of a record from him.

So does much/most of the Utah State Legislature.

So, you dislike much/most of the state's-rights conservative majority of the legislature? What's your malfunction, and why the hell did you move to the most conservative state in the nation if you dislike the way it's governed? We locals love to hear that left coasta's are moving in, and hate the way we govern. Good God.

Old Orin Hatch who would have liked to change the Constitution so some day Arnold Schwartznagger could become President. Yes he needs to retire or be booted out.

I've seen Jason Chaffetz on the Neil Cavuto show a good number of times and he seems to be a good, solid conservative. Supports the repeal of Obamacare, opposed to Cap and Tax, opposed to raising the debt ceiling, etc. I hope he is true to his word. Time for old dinosaurs like Orin Hatch to leave.

Yep. Trust, but verify comes to mind. With his past associations and baggage, it's hard to know that he's going to be more reliable than ole assault-weapon ban Orrin. I guess I just despise professional politicians.
