Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is apparently telling associates he will run against Sen. Orrin Hatch in 2012

The Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday in an above-the-fold A1 story that "five Utah politicos, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Chaffetz has told them directly in recent weeks that he will contend for the Republican (senate) nomination."

The story is attracting national attention, including pieces from Politico, MSNBC.com, UPI, and National Journal.

....and he was friends with Ted Kennedy. OK. So what?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Character makes **ALL** the difference!

If true tyranny comes to our nation, Orrin Hatch, and those like him ( the “Weenies”) will spit shine the jack boots crushing our necks.

And....If a person will NOT defend Article 2, Section 1, of the Constitution he **absolutely** will NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT stand up to tyranny when all of the Constitution is shredded.

plain talk,

I don't know if you are posting from Orrin's office. If you are, I have a suggestion for Orrin.

If he expects to have any hope of winning a place on the primary ticket, or winning a primary, I should do a Donald Trump. He should plainly and emphatically demand that Obama PROVE with certifiable evidence that he is a citizen and a natural born citizen!

Do that and he will win.

“The entire old guard needs to go.”

IMO, that is the only way the Republican Party will survive and thrive.

Compared to what? it’s the U.S. Senate after all. :-) Compared to many of them up there Hatch is fine, decent and reasonable

That's a very, very low standard and Utah can do a lot better.

One of Hatch's biggest problems is that he's an ankle-grabber: he'll talk tough sometimes but eventually he'll give in and let the liberals have their way with him. It's not for nothing his office motto is:

Don't count your Hatches until they chicken!

Chaffetz would be great and be more representative of the people of Utah. Hatch has been there too long. He is part of the problem.

Hatch is just another "Poster Boy" for Term Limits.

Hatch was way too comfy around Teddy K. Never liked that. Maybe you did...but I couldn't stomach it.

Chaffetz’ father’s first wife was Katherine “Kitty” Dickson, who later married a Massachusetts Democratic politician named Michael S. Dukakis. The breakup must have been amicable, as the younger Chaffetz — while a student and football placekicker at Brigham Young University — was a Utah co-chairman of Michael Dukakis’ 1988 campaign as the Democratic nominee for president

I was a Democrat in college. Reagan was a Democrat. I don't hold it again Chaffetz who has turned out to be one of the most conservative members of Congress--a lifetime ACU 100 rating.

Hatch has a lifetime ACU rating of 89.47. He has been running scared since Bennett lost against Lee. Hatch has embraced the Tea Party movement like a life preserver.

Agreed. We can always do better and hope that is the case here. But I keep all of this in perspective and this piling onto hatch is silly. We have bigger problems than him. But if we can get someone better that’s fine by me. .

No...we don't. And you know we don't.

Hey, we term limit the President of the United States...why not Senators.

Here in OK...we term limit our State Reps..and it seems to be working okay.....

The Founder's of this Nation NEVER meant for Politicians to stay in Washington...20-40 yrs. The Founder's apparently never thought about or considered...the "Career Politician"...

The job was never supposed to be a career choice...in fact it was a "hardship" on many of our early leaders. A duty to country...A service.

FWIW-

Term limits seem to work here in OK.....

I'd guess...part of the problem in CA. is the public.

Heck when I lived there they were stupid...and they just keep getting more stupid. I think it has nothing to do with TERM LIMITS.

ACU ratings dont’ mean anything.

Orrin Hatch votes for liberal Supreme Court justices and they still give him that rating.

Term limits have everything to do with the revolving door representation has become; indeed, it pre-selects candidates because their sponsors much come up with sufficient cash to get a nameless stooge elected in the first place. Because our representatives are looking at a definite termination date, they must set up an exit strategy. That means they have to start selling out earlier than they otherwise might if the option of keeping their jobs was still open.

Madison argued most of this rather ably in Federalist 53.
