A 73-year-old man shot dead five people around Yuma, Arizona, before turning a gun on himself, police said.

Another victim was flown about 180 miles northeast to a Phoenix-area hospital after being seriously injured, Yuma Police Sgt. Clint Norred said in a joint press release with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.

According to Yuma police, an "elderly male" went into a business in the city limits and shot an adult male. Police Chief Jerry Geier later identified this victim as Jerrold Shelley, a local attorney.

The four others were killed in greater Yuma County, where the other person was injured, according to Yuma Police Officer Cruz Vidal.

Police determined that these shootings were linked and identified the suspect as Carey Hal Dyess, a 73-year-old Yuma man.

Around 11:30 a.m., Yuma County sheriff's deputies found Dyess dead off U.S. Highway 95 in Blaisdell, a community east of Yuma. He died from "what appears to be ... a self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said.

The city locked down schools and sent extra police patrols to City Hall.

Hmmm

That’s the first thing I thought when I heard a lawyer was shot. That, or a custody case.

Court records show Dyess was involved in two civil court cases, one in Yuma and one in nearby Wellton.

Being a lawyer can be a little hectic.

Looks like Dyess took out the people he was involved with regarding two or more civil cases.

Most murderers, in this country, know their victims personally. That would lead me to believe this happens pretty often although the link isn’t always made.

Dyess’ former wife is believed to be among the four people he killed, but their identities have not yet been released.

Dyess put four rounds into the face of one of his wifes’ friends. Guessing- she might have testified against Dyess?

The first shooting occurred around 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) in Wellton, east of Yuma. The still-unidentified victim was a friend of the gunman’s ex-wife. She was shot four times in the face but “was alert and breathing” when police arrived, Wellton Police Cpl. David Rodriguez told the Sun. She was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital; her condition is not known.

With this economy, the courts, financial difficulties, and the level of stress today, I'd guess there are *lots* of people out there that have been pushed hard up against the wall and are becoming short fused, walking time bombs.

Well all in all I think I’d rather do myself in rather than go on some crazy rampage. Divorce on the other hand makes ordinary normal people do insane things.

Oh, many would be surprised...

Most hired guns get contracted by those who were beat like a drum in court, due to divorces. No joke. Many of these people were made into life time punching bag...Some don't deal with it well.

Trying to think of the ol’ saw that goes something like this... if you mess with an old person they’ll just kill you.

Don't pick a fight with an old man, because if he can't fight, he'll just kill you.

From strictly a technical aspect, the face is a poor target. I personally know of two people shot, one in the face and the other in the forehead, that survived.

I understand the premise of your post- anger/frustration. In the end, self control is either there, or it isn’t, and if it’s gone, anarchy rules the day.

My ex wife and my ex friend blah blah blah and my ex in laws were complicit blah blah blah and my ex sister in law and her husband blah blah blah

I thought of some really diabolical and creative ways of torturing and in the end eliminating them, but the consequences weren’t something I wanted my name on, (especially) since I had a child to consider. Put another way, I was one disciplined individual.

Trust me when I say that I’ve been to the edge.

I was awarded custody of my son. Were I not to have been awarded custody, I may have acted foolishly.

I am being about as candid as I’ve ever been regarding this matter, which transpired over 30 years ago.

An orderly society cannot permit it’s citizens to extract revenge over perceived injustices, but it will also be hard pressed to prevent them 100% of the time.

The 2nd amendment exists for this explicit purpose.

Sounds like Dyess used an automatic with 4 shots to the face of one of his victims. I’m not condoning Dyess whatsoever, but know this, I have been just about as pissed off and angry. Scary. Tragic. Biblical. Satanic too.

I was surprised to read 91,000 people live in Yuma. When we went through there 20 years ago, it must have been 110 in the shade. The Dairy Queen worker handed us an ice cream cone that was dripping down her arm. Just can’t imagine so many people putting up with that heat.

I suppose this thread will leave a lasting impression on me, especially the next time someone messes with an old fogey and I happen to be in the kill zone.

Anger?

There is big difference between stating brutal the facts and being angry. Ya see, I've never been divorced but fully understand what the machine can do to people.

Last time I was in Phoenix, it was like being on the surface of Mercury....It could have melted lead.

While in the rental car, the metal seat belt latch branded my arm.

How those folks deal with it is a mystery to me.
