US 'deeply troubled' at killings on Israel-Syria border

The United States said Sunday it is "deeply troubled" over clashes on the Syrian border with Israel that reportedly resulted in 14 deaths, and called for calm on both sides.

Israeli troops opened fire as protesters from Syria on Sunday stormed a ceasefire line in the occupied Golan Heights.

"We are deeply troubled by events that took place earlier today in the Golan Heights resulting in injuries and the loss of life," the State Department said in a statement.

"We call for all sides to exercise restraint. Provocative actions like this should be avoided."

The US statement emphasized that "Israel, like any sovereign nation, has a right to defend itself."

Hundreds of protesters rushed towards the ceasefire line on Sunday, cutting through barbed wire as they tried to enter the Golan Heights in a repeat of demonstrations last month that saw thousands mass along Israel's north.

Not deeply troubled at all...... new enemy tactic answered with a tried and true response.

Deadly Force.

Erkel Mugabe does not speak for real Americans.

My opinion.

That’s strange, I’m not troubled at all.

You can bet your last dollar that Israeli troops wouldn't use lethal force against the Syrian “protesters” unless they had good reason to believe that the “protesters” were armed. There seems to be no mention of this salient fact in the pro-Arab propaganda stories in the MSM.

I'm not so sure about that. I would certainly give the order to shoot to kill anyone who crosses the border illegally. (I've been advocating the same thing here in the US for ages now.)

Well, if the “protesters” have implements capable of cutting barbed wire, they are capable of lethal force (knives, swords, etc.). ‘Nuff said.

Israel is deeply troubled at this killing in Pakistan. We’ll just assume they were unarmed civilians until they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they weren’t.

I think Israel should have used.... MORE force in order to protect it self.

That's possible, but I've not read it, and imo irrelevant. These weren't protesters, rather invaders. Also irrelevant to some extent. A border can be defended by force. And though I don't know the circumstances, a group advancing on an IDF element is a threat, it's not necessary to call a lawyer to see if they're armed, or to wait till they fire first. It's simply the risk you take when you cross another border illegally.

Unfortunately the people who sneak into Israel have a tendency to do horrible things, like, strap bombs to themselves and blow up buses and nightclubs. If they just broke into the country to play practical jokes with cans of silly string, there would be no lethal force at the border.
