The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that it plans to ban the sale of “the most toxic rat and mouse poisons, as well as most loose bait and pellet products” to residential customers. The goal is to better protect children, pets and wildlife. “These changes are essential to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures of children that occur every year from rat and mouse control products and also to protect household pets,” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. The EPA also will require that all rat and mouse poisons

Even better: Two cats get in a knock-down drag-out hissing spitting yowling growling argument over the dying mouse right next to the bed at 4:30 am, and then the winner lies down and starts eating it on a pile of your laundry.

We actually haven’t put out mouse baits because we do have two cats and I’m scared of them getting into the poison, but as incompetent as ours are at pest control (be it mouse or bug), I may have to.

So where did the Supreme Court fall down when it ruled that as long as Congress’ intent can be discerned in any court case involving the agency’s action, the agency’s action is permissible?

I’ve never heard of a “judical” [sic] branch.

Judical - decides if laws are Constitutional or not

No. The judiciary's primary role is not to decide if laws are Constitutional or not. It is to decide individual cases that come before them according to the Constitution and the laws.

We were gifted with some gingerbread last Christmas. we learned that rats and mice LOVE gingerbread. :-)

As to birds, I got out of the van Sunday and a Grackle whizzed by my head and landed on the dash.

I recommend the books by Temple Grandin, an animal behavior specialist but not a sentimentalist; she actually designs slaughterhouses so they will be more humane to animals. Apparently predators (like both dogs and cats) have an instinct to chase down prey, but they don't learn how to kill unless their mothers teach them. Many house pets never got those lessons.

Grandin is amazing. She is a high-functioning autistic person who has derived many insights into human and animal behavior from her condition.

My cat was hanging out of a mouse's mouth.

Well, I *THINK* it was a mouse.

That's a mouse, right?

“Funny! I have 2 cats too. The skinny tabby female is great at catching (and killing) gophers; waits all day if necessary staring at the holes in my lawn and then gets them. One morning she killed two.

The fat male cat is really stupid; he thinks he can catch gophers by sticking his arm down the holes. I just know the gophers are laughing at him.”

We live in a cul-de-sac in a semi-rural area where everyone has 2-3 acres. The coyotes have cleaned out all the cats and small dogs. One of these days they are going to meet Mr. Mossberg.

Aw geeze. LOL

Nimh can meow with mice in his mouth (as I discovered). He jumped up on the bed and was mewling so I reached out to pet him and caressed the live mouse instead. Nimh sat there watching, the D@#% cat! My petting the mouse scared it and it started to run around on the bed with the cat in pursuit. Woke up Hubby. LOL

Nimh only exerts himself when he has live "toys".

I got it and thought the same thing when I read this. The EPA will always create more problems than they attempt to do otherwise.

Next we’ll have to contend with rat invasions....and you won’t be able to shoot them if they take our guns.

“I just know the gophers are laughing at him”

DON’T tell him but I’m laughing at him, too! I have this picture in my head of him sticking his arm down this hole and getting nothing. LOL!

It was better than when he brought the live rabbit in and sat down to watch “Dad” catch it. Nimmy loves playing with his humans. :-)

There is only one reason to do this and that is to control common everyday products and turn them into “special” products that can only be applied by authorized pest control businesses and sold by permit only to those businesses.

In addition to that, the cost of the products will skyrocket, the common citizen will be forced to call licensed exterminators to kill the rats that they used to do themselves, the issuers of the licenses will generate money through permits and licenses...better yet...have more power over the populace, and finally...CREATE MORE GOVERNMENT MANDATED JOBS!

Ain’t that something? In a single stroke of the pen new jobs have been created to handle the new paperwork and licensing (and inspectors) and the people are once again forced to use “licensed” applicators to do something they did before.

The last time they tried to protect ourselves from ourselves in the use of rat poison they used (you have to be older to remember this) MR. YUCK! Yes, that’s right, poisons had a picture of Mr. Yuck on them to warn that you should not drink or eat them. Somehow Mr. Yuck failed to perform his function. Now, they will use live people.
