GM CEO calls for $1 gas tax hike
CNN ^ | June 7 2011 | By Chris Isidore

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said his company and his industry would be helped, not hurt, if consumers paid higher gas taxes.

In an interview published in Tuesday's Detroit News, Akerson floated the idea of a $1 a gallon increase in the gas tax as a way to encourage buyers to purchase smaller, more fuel efficient cars. Greg Martin, spokesman for GM's Washington office, confirmed that the quotes reflect Akerson's and GM's view.

Akerson said he would support a jump in the gas tax if it came instead of tighter fuel economy regulations that GM (GM, Fortune 500) and other automakers will have to meet in coming years. By the year 2025, automakers could be forced to hit fuel economy averages of as much as 62 mpg.

Akerson said that a higher gas tax, including an immediate 50-cent-a-gallon increase to take advantage of recent declines in gas prices, would probably make some of his Republican friends "puke." But he said it would do more to help the environment than the pending fuel economy rules.

You know what would really help the environment? Shutting down his crap-ass company.

Bought a new car last month....I’ll give Akerson 3 guesses at what brand was so not-in-the-running I didn’t even remember to not consider it.........

An obvious Obama croney. Do NOT, ever, buy GM vehicles while this fraud is in control. And go to many dealers, and tell them that so long as the Obama monsters are not removed...no deal.

I currently drive a 2004 gmc truck but it is the LAST gm product I will ever buy. I made this decision after obama bought out the company with my tax dollars.

$4 which is already tanking the U.S. economy...isn't high enough for this Croney Capitalist. Remember how the Obama enviro team wanted to up gas prices to $7 / gallon?

I drive a 1997 Ford Escort with 250,000 miles on it that gets 30-35mpg. My husband’s 2000 Ford Ranger with 150,000 miles gets about 23mpg. We own them free and clear and have no intentions of taking on a car note — let alone one from goobermint motors.

This turkey is welcome to take a long walk off a short pier, along with his gas tax ideas.

I’d rather buy a 2012 VW Passat TDI or Jetta TDI that gets, with some modest tuning, 50 MPG!

Of course this GM idiot is going to tout whatever his government masters tell him to—

When I go to buy a new car, I may take this article to the GM dealership after talking to them about a particular model, pull it out, give it to them and say—”Oh, I forgot. I’ll never buy another one of your turd buckets with four wheels. Have a nice day!”

Screw GM and Akerson.

And what does that do to the truckers and the products they transport?

Idiots. I have never owned a GM car and never will.

Garbage.

I predict the UAW will strike GM and Chrysler. In essence striking against themselves.

General Motors newest CEO Dan Akerson will receive a $9 million compensation package that includes an annual $1.7 million in cash, $5.3 million in salary stock delivered over three years starting on September 30, 2011, as well as $2 million in restricted stock.

Good. His stock won't be worth s*** soon enough.

I grew up in a GM family. Oldsmobile's and Buick's for cars, Chevy trucks. Was taught never to even think of buying a Ford.

In April, I bought my first F150. I will never again buy a GM product. My siblings have said the same, as have my cousins.

What is sad is that the dealer in my hometown is a family friend. He started selling cars in the 40’s, and my Grandpa was one of his first customers (they played cards together till they couldn't drive anymore).

Still, I won't support fascists. And GM is fascist.

My first car was a 1972 Chevy Nova, 350 V-8. I put 156,000 miles on it before selling it for $100 to a waitress at the restaurant I worked at. By that time it was leaking oil all over the place.
She let her boyfriend borrow it, and he took off for Mexico with the car and was never heard from again. LOL.

My younger brother owned a 1975 Vega that eventually just stopped working. He parked it on a street and the city towed it away after a few weeks.
