WASHINGTON (AFP) US President Barack Obama should begin only a "very modest" withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan next month and not bring home any combat troops, senior US Senator John McCain said Wednesday.
"I'm in exact agreement with (US Defense) Secretary Gates that it should be very modest," McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters.
"He said, basically, no combat troops and that's what I agree with," McCain said amid a political battle in the US Congress over the size and speed of Obama's planned withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Bring them home NOW! All of them. All they’re doing now is training the next group of terrorists for free on the US taxpayer dime. Stop the nonsense and get out.
It's not the first time McCain has helped train al-Qaeda at U.S. expense.
I agree. Whether we leave now or ten years from now, Afghanistan is bound to slide back into barbarism and anarchy immediately thereafter. Why waste another American life forestalling the inevitable?
And if they ever give us any more trouble, nuke the whole place and be done with it.
Actually, NATO (Uncle Sugar) is also building the coming caliphate some of the best military bases money and blood can buy.
Will he and his family please leave the Republican Party.
With all due respect to his service to our country, the man is getting old and feeble and needs to retire. He doesn’t have the mental functionability to be dealing with the War on Terror. This is a whole different ball of wax than the war he fought in. There was a single identifiable enemy, North Viet Nam and their viet cong supporters. In the Middle East the enemy is barely identifiable and from the many nations. Recruited and trained from the outside.
Russian support of the Taliban will bring about the same results that the USA support of the Taliban against Russia brought.
OBL is history, we need to get out of that hell-hole.
