Shroud of Turin is a fake created by famous master Giotto, claims Italian art expert
Daily Mail ^ | 06/08/2011

The Shroud of Turin was made by medieval artist Giotto, it was claimed yesterday.

The 14ft length of fabric, said to be the burial cloth of Christ, bears a faint image of a man and appears to be stained by blood.

However carbon-dating tests have suggested it was produced between 1260 and 1390.

Now Italian art expert Luciano Buso has suggested that the original cloth deteriorated and Giotto was asked to make a copy.

After months of careful examination of photographs of the Shroud - the relic is kept locked away and not available to be viewed unless on special occasions - Luciano Buso has come up with an idea worthy of a Da Vinci Code thriller.

He says that several veiled appearances of the number 15, hidden in the fabric by the artist, indicate Giotto created the Shroud in 1315 - and that it is a copy of the original which had been damaged and was then lost over the centuries. Giotto was perhaps the best known artist of his time and was made famous for his decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, the fresco that depicts the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ. Mr Buso insists that 700 years ago it was common practice for artists to insert partial dates into their works so as to guarantee their authenticity and it was known only to a handful of people so as to avoid forgeries. His claims, which form part of a new book he has written, would coincide with 1980's carbon dating - which has been dismissed by the Church - and which puts the Shroud's origins in the early 14th century.

...which has been dismissed by the Church

It is unclear who of the 1.2 billion Catholics "dismissed" Buso's theory. I guess the Daily Mail doesn't really care.

The Shroud of Turin is probably authentic, because of the many good reason stated here. Jesuit Father Filas saw a picture of a coin on the Shroud which he dated to about 29 A.D.

So the process is not so mysterious that no one could have done it. Of course that doesn't mean the one is false but a unique process is no longer an argument in it's favor.

The Shroud is now immersed in a bath of some chemical to protect it from decaying more. This chemical bath evidently prohibits any accurate carbon testing now. It really is not important. The Shroud has been proven authentic...the question is not is it real or fake, but is it Jesus or not. There is not way it was created in the middle ages as the technology for knowing the different light wave frequencies that have been used to prove it’s authenticity were known back then...the image is also contains 3 dimensional information...that precludes it from being any kind of painting, dyeing, etc.

J’accuse!

Great movie, caught it on TCM the other night.
Made after the end of the war, most of the “dead”
and maimed were actual wounded veterans.
Interesting story line with the wife of one being
in love with another and all three knowing.
Could actually lend itself to a modern remake but
they would probably screw it up.

J’accuse!

I have read experts say it’s authentic, I have read experts say it’s fake, I have read experts say they don’t know.

I have read extensively on the Shroud. Barrie Schwortz,a member of the original STURP team has a web site, www.shroud.com that has a wealth of information. I have a few books on the Shroud research.

With today's technology it can't be proven to be the burial cloth of Jesus. But the research also has not yet shown how it could have been "faked." There is no way with today's technology how one could create the image. If you can catch it, watch the show on the History channel on the Shroud. It is fascinating.

It is my belief it is indeed the burial cloth of Jesus. Most researchers who have concluded it is the burial cloth of Jesus, believe it is the image of the Resurrection.

The traffic in the relics of saints and martyrs has traditionally been smiled upon by the Vatican while at the same time notoriously known to be the playground of forgers and con artists that has lightened the slush funds of many wealthy clergy and nobles attempting to buy their way into the Gates of Whatever.

I’d wager that less than 5% of such relics dating from the Rennaissance to the present are authentic and 0% of anything older not being a complete and utter shuck.

In 1980 I was a graduate student in the chemistry dept. at American U., Washington DC. I was asked to help serve drinks at the American Chemical Society annual meeting. In exchange I was allowed to stay and listen to the main speaker. His talk was about the shroud and he was part of a team that had been studying it. To make a long story short, he ended his talk by declaring that the image on the shroud was made by some form of energy unknown to him, and that he had come to the conclussion that some energy emission at the time of the resurrection was responsible for the image! His final words were that, to the best of his knowledge, that was the burial cloth of Jesus and that He rose from the dead.

Swordmaker may have more information, but I remember reading that other scientists found serious flaws in that scientist claim (the one of recreated the Shroud). There are many aspects of the real Shroud that this scientist conveniently ignored.

i saw that one also. he absolutely did NOT recreate the shroud. what he did, could be detected and explained. but some atheists on the original team, admitted they couldn’t explain it.

...and Divinc code, and 10000 other articles here, show the insane massive attact CNN, libs, and others make on anything connected to Christianity. while not even covering attrocities against women and gays by Islam.

If Jesus walked up to Him and said hello, He would call Him fake.

We were fortunate to see the Shroud of Turin in 2000. Unforgettable experience.

“I have read experts say it’s authentic, I have read experts say it’s fake, I have read experts say they don’t know.”

Trend for almost all similar ancient relicy Catholic stuff, though? This one’s probably fake, just like almost every other one.

i absolutely agree with most of that. i believe most were fakes. i understand human nature and greed.

...and, if the shroud were fake, it wouldn’t change my faith. as others said better, it doesn’t need to be real.

however, i have read a lot about it. and there has been some good attempts to duplicate it, that get parts of it correct. but never all. and there has been nothing conclusive to prove it a fake.
Swordmakers posts are excellent. (like his #40). and i admit, he is more clear and concise than i am. but, there IS plenty of information, about the cotton repair weave, and the progressively older carbon dates as you go away from it.
and no one has duplicated it completely, or even successful proved how it was made.
...if one day someone does, fine. but, no one has yet.

now if you want to talk about the archeological evidence for the Book of Mormon... ;)

And to add authenticity he went out and collected pollen and other microscopic things from specific regions around Jerusalem.

” There are many aspects of the real Shroud that this scientist conveniently ignored.”

That's assuming the shroud is what it purports to be. That certainly hasn't been established.
