Five People Shot on Boardwalk in Brighton Beach (in Brooklyn)

Five people were shot along the boardwalk in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, Thursday afternoon during a mini heat wave that had packed the city’s beaches.

Two of the victims are badly wounded, the authorities said.

The shooting took place around 5:20 p.m. on the boardwalk near Brighton Sixth Street, the Fire Department said.

The shooting unfolded on a day when a mini-heat wave and a school holiday sent hordes of people to Coney Island and Brighton Beaches, which were teeming with beachgoers — many of them teenagers — trying to escape temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

I searched a few keywords, but could bot find this story in FR, even though the shooting was over 4 hours ago. I worked all day outside in New York City today, and the heat is oppressive, but I don't see how that causes anyone to shoot others.

Looks like Bay 5. I roamed those boardwalks as a child. Bay 1 had better waves. Played basketball at the brighten 2nd street park and played handball off ocean parkway.

Miss those days.

This is unusual, as it's a place considered relatively free of disorganized crime. But you can take the subway there, and it shares what once was an actual island called Coney with some notorious public housing projects.
