'I'm a Marxist:' Dalai Lama
AFP ^ | May 20, 2010 | AFP

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said Thursday that he is a Marxist, yet credits capitalism for bringing new freedoms to the communist country that exiled him -- China.

"Still I am a Marxist," the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader said in New York, where he arrived with an entourage of robed monks and a heavy security detail to give a series of paid public lectures.

Marxism has "moral ethics, whereas capitalism is only how to make profits," the Dalai Lama, 74, said.

However, he credited China's embrace of market economics for breaking communism's grip over the world's most populous country and forcing the ruling Communist Party to "represent all sorts of classes."

Marxism has only brought the world oppression and poverty.

Free trade is where we get our prosperity.

Religion is where we get our morals and ethics.

Never from governments.

Sorry Dalai......FAIL

So the Dali Lama has been a fraud all these years?

“Moral ethics”. Right.

Including the “ethical” murder of tens of millions of their own fellow Chinese citizens.

“Moral”, indeed.

NO, it does not (as was your point).

What this proves is that Milton Friedman was about a thousand times smarter than this moron - and Friedman’s beliefs led to more compassionate results regardless.

Marxism has "moral ethics"

If you're talking about principles to which we aspire, then Marxism has no better ethics than capitalism.

If you're talking about real results, and what real people do, short of the principles thought it may be, just take a look at history.

Is there anything inherent in Tibetan Buddhist teaching that tells us you must be a Marxist to be a good Buddhist?

With a statement like this, it’s easy to understand why so many young Tibetans are looking elsewhere for leadership: the head of a religion and nation reducing himself by saying he’s an ‘-ist’.

Marxism has "moral ethics"

Right. Like the 73,237,000 dead by starvation and murder in China. Or the moral ethics of the 58,627,000 dead by starvation and murder in the USSR. Or the moral ethics of denial of the right to worship God. Or the moral ethics of suppression of the right to speak freely. Or the moral ethics of the stripping of the right to own property.

Those kind of moral ethics.

"whereas capitalism is only how to make profits,"

Right. Not once is capitalism interested in how to serve customers best. Not once has capitalism ever provided the masses with great luxuries. Not once have capitalists ever donated to environmental, free speech, or freedom of religion causes. Capitalists never pay any taxes, either, helping to create infrastructure and the less fortunate.

Yeah, capitalism is just awful.

I heard that the Dali Lama is an awful tipper when he golfs.

Yes.
Capitalism is just a pejorative invented by Marx
to describe free markets and freedom it's self.

They all hate the freedom of others.

“To give a series of paid public lectures”
Yes, usually when Buddhist teachers give lectures or teachings, there is a monetary donation given.
However, at every teaching that I've attended, that money was given back to the presenters as a gift from the teacher. They've never kept the money.
Can't speak for HHDL, since I've only been to a teaching given by him once, and it was free.

GOD....comments like this just show your ignorance of Tibetan history.
It's better to keep your comments to yourself and let people THINK that you are ignorant instead of posting them and confirming it.

Buddhism isn’t a religion in the normal sense. It has no God to worship or destination. It’s more of a spiritual/naturalistic atheism with a rule book that comes from nowhere, in search of nothing as a destination.

The Big Llama is in it for the food, praise and toys. The elites look in the mirror and see their god.

Does being a spiritual leader qualify one to become a leader in the economy as well?

One big reason why "intellectuals" and "spiritual leaders" don't like capitalism: in capitalism somebody who is not a smooth and articulate intellectual, but who has good ideas and energy, can become wealthy and successful. Meanwhile, the smooth talker who fails to deliver for his customers will eventually have to find a gig in academia or politics.

All ideology aside, the Dalai Lama just isn't very bright.

I mean, Chuck Schumer - for example - is reliably wrong about everything, but he's usually got a cleverly misleading argument for his position.

The Dalai Lama is Kathie Lee Gifford compared to Pope Benedict or Patriarch Kirill.
