Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said Thursday that he is a Marxist, yet credits capitalism for bringing new freedoms to the communist country that exiled him -- China.
"Still I am a Marxist," the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader said in New York, where he arrived with an entourage of robed monks and a heavy security detail to give a series of paid public lectures.
Marxism has "moral ethics, whereas capitalism is only how to make profits," the Dalai Lama, 74, said.
However, he credited China's embrace of market economics for breaking communism's grip over the world's most populous country and forcing the ruling Communist Party to "represent all sorts of classes."

With a statement like this, it’s easy to understand why so many young Tibetans are looking elsewhere for leadership: the head of a religion and nation reducing himself by saying he’s an ‘-ist’.
I never understood where he, or Gandhi, or the various yogis that infest parts of the country derived any moral authority, anyway.
He was a absolute monarchist before he fled his country and left his subjects to the brutalities of the commies, like a scared little chicken.
As demonstrated by the care used in the take over of Tibet.
... In addition to be a bald headed asshole.
Right. Like the 73,237,000 dead by starvation and murder in China. Or the moral ethics of the 58,627,000 dead by starvation and murder in the USSR. Or the moral ethics of denial of the right to worship God. Or the moral ethics of suppression of the right to speak freely. Or the moral ethics of the stripping of the right to own property.
Those kind of moral ethics.
"whereas capitalism is only how to make profits,"
Right. Not once is capitalism interested in how to serve customers best. Not once has capitalism ever provided the masses with great luxuries. Not once have capitalists ever donated to environmental, free speech, or freedom of religion causes. Capitalists never pay any taxes, either, helping to create infrastructure and the less fortunate.
Yeah, capitalism is just awful.
I heard that the Dali Lama is an awful tipper when he golfs.
Yes.
Capitalism is just a pejorative invented by Marx
to describe free markets and freedom it's self.
They all hate the freedom of others.
LOl!
I can think of nothing moral than profits.
Imagine actually creating SOMETHING of value.
Buddhism isn’t a religion in the normal sense. It has no God to worship or destination. It’s more of a spiritual/naturalistic atheism with a rule book that comes from nowhere, in search of nothing as a destination.
The Big Llama is in it for the food, praise and toys. The elites look in the mirror and see their god.
Some people are exceptionally dumb, granting the sanction of the victim, extraordinarily stupid.
I am shocked, I tell ya!
Would that be Marxism? ;<)
One big reason why "intellectuals" and "spiritual leaders" don't like capitalism: in capitalism somebody who is not a smooth and articulate intellectual, but who has good ideas and energy, can become wealthy and successful. Meanwhile, the smooth talker who fails to deliver for his customers will eventually have to find a gig in academia or politics.
Well, that settles it. He’s nothing but an old fool.
As would Ayn Rand, and I.
Perhaps someone should send him a DVD of Atlas Shrugged Part 1, ASAP.
