A former Secret Service agent prepared to put his life on the line to protect Barack Obama has quit to stand as a Republican against the U.S. president's Democratic Party.
Daniel Bongino has caused eyebrows to be raised in the famously private and apolitical agency with his bid to represent Maryland in the Senate.
After spending 12 years protecting presidents, candidates, and world leaders, including George W Bush, he shadowed Mr Obama for nearly two years and was frequently by his side as the president met the public. He was also the lead agent co-ordinating Mr Obama's trips to Prague, Jakarta and Afghanistan.
Guarding U.S. presidents is regarded as the highest honour in the Secret Service, and agents are trained to throw themselves between a gunman and the president in any assassination attempt.
It is exceptionally rare for a member of the agency to follow a political career.
Mr Bongino, who was brought up in New York, is a conservative, Tea Party type of Republican. He resigned five months ago and now aims to capture a Senate seat from the Democrats for the first time in Maryland since 1987.
He said that his only differences with the president were ideological.
"I just don't agree with the way the country is going. We have got to get government out of the way," he said, adding that the president had always treated him well. The Secret Service declined to comment.
Odd it’s in a Canadian paper and not a US one..
I am sure he has a non-disclosure in place so no secrets. Friend who is secret service said alot of them hate when Dems are in White House because they are so low class.
you don’t expect the SRM to print this do you?
Steele actually run a pretty good campaign in MD (before he turned idiot in running RNC). He run in a bad year, but I think in the environment of 2004 or 2010, Steele would have won.
If he runs a good Senate campaign in 2012 and the mood of the country is equal or better for conservatives, he has a fighting chance.
The stories he can tell! Popcorn, please!
I saw it on one of the cable news shows a couple of days ago.
I disagree. Steele was trying to blur the lines between being a Republican and a Democrat, trying to trick the leftists infesting Maryland into believing he was actually a Democrat. He ran an abysmal campaign and lost to the guy who turned Baltimore into a total hell-hole.
Can he tell stories? Is secrecy in their contract?
The Secret Service declined to comment.
"JFK and LBJ = Philanderers of the highest order, both kept a lot of women in White House for affairs. Both set up "early warning" systems for it and when their wives were nearby. Total immoral men. In addition, LBJ was as crude as the day is long.
Richard Nixon = Weird, moral man but very odd and weird. Paranoid etc. Horrible relationship with his family, almost a recluse.
Spiro Agnew = a nice, decent man, everyone was surprised at his downfall.
Jerry Ford = A true gentlemen who treated them with respect and dignity.
Jimmy Carter = A complete phony who would portray one picture of himself to the public and a very different one in private; i.e., he would be shown carrying his own luggage, suit cases were always empty, he kept empty one just for photo ops. Wanted the people to see him as pious and a non drinker, he and family drank alcohol a lot. Had disdain for the Secret Service, and was very irresponsible with the "football" nuclear codes. Didn't think it was a big deal and would keep military aides at a great distance. Would never acknowledge military or Secret service they were there to serve him.
Ronald Reagan = The real deal. Moral, Honest, respectful and dignified. Treated Secret Service and everyone else with respect and honor. Would always thank everyone all the time. He took the time to know everyone on a personal level. One story was early on in Presidency the President came out of his room with a side arm attached to his hip. The Agent in charge said "Why the pistol Mr. President." Ronald Reagan replied, "In case you boys can't get the job done, I can help." It was common for him to carry a pistol. People do not know that when he met with Gorbachev, he had a pistol in his briefcase. Upon learning that Gary Hart was caught with Donna Rice during the election Ronald Reagan said, "Boys will be boys, but boys will not be President"
Nancy Reagan = Very nice but very protective of the President . . . the Secret Service was always caught in the middle. Nancy would try to control what the President ate all the time (healthy) and he would say to the Agents "come on you gotta help me out." The Reagans rarely drank alcohol. Secret Service said they could count on one hand the times the Reagans were served alcohol other than wine during dinner. They made the comment for all the fake bluster of the Carters it was the Reagans who lived life as genuinely moral people.
George and Barbara Bush = Extremely kind and considerate. Always respectful. Took great care in making sure the agents comforts were taken care of. They would bring them meals etc. One time Barbara Bush brought warm clothes to agents standing outside a Kennebunkport. One agent who was given warm hat tried to nicely say no thanks when he was obviously freezing and President Bush said "Son, don't argue with the first lady, put the hat on." Bill Clinton = Presidency was one giant party. Not trustworthy, he was nice because he wanted everyone to like him but life is just one big game and party to him.
Hillary Clinton = Another phony. Her personality would change the instant cameras were near. She hated with open disdain the military and Secret Service. Again another one who felt people are there to serve her. She was always trying to keep tabs on Bill Clinton.
Al Gore = An egotistical ass who was once overheard by his Secret Service detail when he told his son he needed to do better in school or he "would end up like these guys" and pointed to the Secret Service agents.
G. W. Bush = They loved him and Laura Bush. They said no one is a nicer person than Laura Bush who never has a harsh word to say about anyone. The Bush's went out of their way to take care of the Secret Service and made sure they were well cared for with meals and other comforts. GW was the most prompt of the Presidents. He ran like a well oiled machine. He was also the most in shape who had a very strict work out regimen. The Bush's made sure their entire administration understood to respect and be considerate of the Secret Service. Karl Rove was the one who was the most caring of the Secret Service in the administration.
Barack Obama - Clintons all over again - hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service."
One can say this candidate must have a very strong stomach!
Ben Carden turned Baltimore into a total hell-hole? I mean, Carden was a brain dead, knee-jerk ultra liberal in the House, who has continued that reputation in the Senate, but I don't think he particuarly hurt Baltimore. Martin O'Malley, on the other hand, as mayor of Baltimore brought the morals of the Clintons and the ego and financial responsibility of Nancy Pelosi to the office of mayor of Baltimore City. But Steele has never run against him, to the best of my knowledge. Steele was Bob Ehrlich's running mate when Ehrlich beat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend for governor in 2002, and lost his Senate camapign in 2006 to good-old-liberal Ben Carden.
Anyone think we can agree that the current WH occupant gets the award for having the lowest class of any President in history or could it be no class? Oh, and let’s not forget to include the Queen.
No, sadly, it's not.
If Obama was a Republican and the bodyguard a Democrat, this would be FRONT PAGE HEADLINES from New York to San Diego.
I wonder how members of the SS really feel about this incompetent moron we have as a “President”.
