Troops round up protesters in border regions as anti-Assad rallies spread from Damascus to Daraa; thousands of refugees flee to Turkey; UN says Assad refusing to take phone calls from Ban Ki-Moon.

AMMAN - Syrian helicopter gunships fired machine guns to disperse a large pro-democracy protest in the town of Maarat al-Numaan on Friday, witnesses said, a dangerous escalation of force at the end of a day in which 32 civilians were reported killed by Assad's forces across the country.

The gunship use was the first reported use of air power to quell protests in Syria's uprising.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that helicopters fired at the town after security forces on the ground killed five protesters, but said no killings were reported in the assault by the helicopters.

This is a cool story, but aren’t you more interested in whether or not Sarah Palin had cramps, or if Wiener was cuffing it online?

Hey, Obama, where’s the No-Fly zone? Ain’t you gonna bomb the Syrians just like you did the Libyans? Hmmm?

This is a Sunni revolt against Alawite rule, possibly aided by Ikhwan infiltrators in the Syrian military, some of whom are showing their true colors. I have to wonder to what extent Syrian rebels are being aided by the Iraqi Sunni insurgents who fled American firepower in Iraq. This could be a case of blowback for Assad - in not sealing the border and allowing Syrian Sunnis to fight on behalf of their religious brethren in Iraq, he has created a cadre of Sunni rebels who are expert at guerrilla warfare. What didn’t work against overwhelming American firepower has a much better chance of working against the Syrian military. Which is why Syria’s Alawite rulers will have to resort to the same measures that Hafiz Assad once did, if it wants to put down this insurgency - the leveling of rebel strongholds with artillery and tanks.

I am outright bemused by the situation.

Here is Syria, one of the worst, most murderous, Jew hating, tyrannical, nasty regimes in the world and the world is aghast at it doing precisely what it does??
The same regime that, 2 weeks ago, sent 1,000s of “protesters” swarming over the Israeli border to create an incident & people are upset that this country, that most of the world fully supports in it’s aim to kill every Jew in the Mid East, is actually not killing Jews today, but other Arabs who also want to kill Jews, but with themselves in power?

How nuanced of them...

Where's the *duty to protect* that was used for Libya? I guess the UN/NATO are off-duty when it comes to Syria.

(I'm not advocating US intervention in either, merely highlighting the intellectual inconsistency of the globalists).

Serious question:

Is there ANY nation taking the side of these rebels against Assad?

Looks like the syrian civillians have no stragetic value (i´m still guessing what value the libyans have...)
Because usually foreign states only “help” when there is something in there for them.
(or at least as long the cost doesn´t affect the “effort”).

UN says Assad refusing to take phone calls from Ban Ki-Moon.
It's never too early to Ban Ki-Moon.
