For 30 years it has been used to test the fitness of officers who police riots and other outbreaks of serious public disorder.
The so-called 'shield run' involves officers covering a distance of 500 metres in less than two minutes, 45 seconds while wearing full riot gear and carrying a shield.
But when Inspector Diane Bamber, 51, failed to meet the time limit, she claimed she had been left humiliated.
She brought a sex and age discrimination case against her force, Greater Manchester Police, and now stands to win up to £30,000 after an employment tribunal ruled in her favour.
The landmark case has opened the door for thousands of other women officers to claim payouts and has triggered a review of specialist police training across the country.

I wonder how she’d feel if she was on patrol and got a call for a rape in progress. When she responds and see the perp still raping the poor young girl, she’s not fit enough to attack the perp and he gets up and runs away. Would she claim her back up took too long to respond?

No joke. Even as a dude, you must have a reasonable fitness level to do this. A 51yo lady, it will be tough.
And thus endanger her fellow officers. I get the feeling that these review commissions are likely slanted to the petitioners and that the administrators tolerate this because the complainers generally leave after the award. However the precedent stinks and it stays around forever. "Penny wise but Pound foolish!"

Ask her to think about a mob of Muslim “youth”, a la, Egypt’s Arab Springtime, coming after her like they did Lara Logan.

I remember a recruit class at the Fire Academy .
Recruits were required to put up a 24’ ladder by themselves.
The ladder is listed in the training manual as a two-man ladder, but the point was, most any Firefighter can and will be called upon to put it up alone on the fireground.
This young lady could not get it up so they let her go.
She sued the Chief, a Captain, and the Fire Department and won the suit. She passed the school and went downtown to an Engine Company, where she sucked so badly it was pathetic.
She went on sick leave for a supposed back injury and was found to be working at a Safeway store as cashier while on sick leave. She couldnt beat that one.
I have noticed that some Fire Departments have Rodeo’s where Firefighter compete in job skills. I have al;so noticed that there are two classes, men and women. If the women get paid the same why arent they required to compete with the men?
How can having standards of excellence possibly be lawful?!
Good heavens, why should we expect our law enforcement officers to prove that they can do the jobs we are paying them to do? It is demeaning and insulting.
Just because if they fail to do their job they put the public and their fellow officers lives in danger does not give the state the right to test LEO’s competence.
After all someone is bound to fail and then their feeling will be hurt and they may loose self esteem.
Infants and people in hospice care should sue too.
Women have different fitness levels in the military and are paid the same[by rank].
So, in the UK, any level of standard that a woman cannnot make is an automatic payout? So, no more standards of any kind in the UK. OK. Let them fly an airliner they are not qualified to fly. Drive fire trucks they cannot drive. Be on the queens protection detail, etc.
The UK has fast become a society that is too stupid to continue to survive...and we are not far behind.
Running at 8 MPH for 645 yards is the requirement. Roughly 1 1/2 laps around a standard 440 yard track in 165 seconds.

Sure, throw in the gear, and its alot of fun. Helmet, boots, shield, belt, vest, etc.
She’s 51 and female. She’s not as likely to do well on such a test as, say, a 26-year-old man. You would think that she’d realize that going in.
Her fellow officers know what they are dealing with. She might just get the level of backup she provides.
Not much chance she would ever face an unruly crowd anyway...at least in England...especially if there’s a muslim in the crowd.
well I would think if she were every deployed and could not perform the duties as required, as a fellow officer, I would be compelled to sue HER for putting my safety at risk. Coincidently, I would ask for 30K in damages... to be donated back to the taxpayer who was robbed.
If she can’t do the job she needs to go. Having said that, I am a 51 yo male and work on a farm. I know I could do it, but it would probably lay me up for the next three days. Hurts my feet and ankles just thinking about it.
If you have to run 500 meters in a riot, my guess is that you will have dropped your shield and baton and probably tossed off your vest. A better test would be if you can bust open a watermelon with your baton. The best way to break up a riot is with pistols from behind the shields. Oh, this is England. Give the rioters money.
Sounds like the cases that were used to water down U.S. police forces, where every test used to weed the incompetent from the competent that happened to end up with there being a black applicant who failed was, ipso facto, racist. Now, any incompetent can be a police officer, so long as s/he is also black. Perhaps that explains the surfeit of “ethnic” meter maids and bumper butlers in NYC.

Probably true. But regardless of who needs the backup, the situation is going to involve a bunch of fail. The best way out used to be a firm hazing until the incompetent left or got their act together, but that's no longer possible.
My argument still holds.
If they are paid the same they should be able to do the same job.
Now the cops will just sit there in their car watching you get attacked, and maybe come over to help you afterwards. At least in the UK, that is.

500 meters is 546 yards, 29" in 165 seconds, which works out to about 6.7 MPH which is spot on for a 9 minute mile. A fast walk is about 3 MPH.
It is clear to me she was gaming the system. I think that 51 YO guys would have a hard time with the requirements.

...LONG Long ago (in a galaxy far away?), i ran 26 mile marathons. so i’m glad my quick guess was close.
and race walkers do about 7mph i think.
maybe i couldn’t walk for an hour. but even now, i think i could do ONE lap at 5mph walking. and much faster jogging.
again, even with full gear, “passing score” is just jogging speed for a little over a lap. hardly unfair for a public defender, i think.
He'd be hounded into re-hab along with Rep Weiner.
