Thank you for your support of our troops, who are worth much more than the pittances that they are paid!
Conscription was certainly a way to control costs, but it also allowed a higher degree of selectivity before the deferment nonsense began. The military was full of healthy young men and there was no need to reduce standards to accomodate females, as an example.
I didn’t see a great deal of very well paid soldiers in Iraq, considering the circumstances of their employment. If you’re willing to work seven days a week, over 12 hours a day, every day then yes, you can do much better in the civil sector. This is especially true if the military pension is not considered, and in most cases it will not apply because most service members don’t stick out the 20 years.
