Other states leaving Secure Communities (TX expands ICE program]

As Texas moves toward expanding Secure Communities, several northern states are dropping out of the program that matches the fingerprints of those arrested against a U.S. [ICE] database.

Last week, before Gov. Rick Perry's announcement that the expansion of Secure Communities would be on the agenda for the Legislature's special session, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced his state will not take part in the program.

Massachusetts joins New York and Illinois in ditching Secure Communities amid concerns that the program, which ICE says is intended to identify the illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes and ensure they're removed from the country, instead has resulted in people who have minor convictions or no criminal records being removed from the country.

Sen. Jose Rodríguez, D-El Paso, said he understands why the states are pulling out of a program that was sold as a voluntary program that uses law enforcement resources to deport hardened criminals.

"They're pulling out for several reasons," Rodríguez said. "One, they've seen the harm that it causes the community in terms of the relationship between the law enforcement community and the immigrant community.....

In Texas, all 254 counties and some municipalities - including Houston - participate in Secure Communities, checking the fingerprints of everyone booked at jails and detention centers against ICE's database. If the person being booked has a record with ICE, the agency will be alerted.

Legislation proposed by Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, would expand the program to all law enforcement agencies, meaning processing facilities like San Antonio's detention center would have to enter the fingerprints of everyone who's arrested, including those accused of minor crimes or picked up on traffic violations.

..that closes a "loophole" in the program that keeps people arrested on Class C misdemeanor charges from being entered into Secure Communities....

Failing to see how this is a problem. Here illegally? Too bad, you’re gone.

MA, NY, IL and a 7 rats are demanding CA leave “Secure Communities” as well. What do all four of those states have in common?

I’m going to Austin this AM to testify to get SB9 passed on sanctuary cities. I will APPLAUD SECURE COMMUNITIES! Sounds wonderful and also tell Tommy not to close that loophole.

Texas should take out full-page ads and put up billboards, advertising the states that don’t work with ICE or require e-Verify. Then maybe all of the illegals will move from Texas to those other states, and put the strain on THEIR state budgets and cause an increase in THEIR crime rate...

My thought exactly. Sort of a "reverse boycott." Promote the states that want to protect the illegals, to the illegals.

The screeching, moaning and whining in the form of bizarre twisted logic complaints from those states would be hilarious.
