Actually, the writer who wrote this statement in the posted article isn't quite correct. The word can and should be spelled out when used in prayer, or intended to be used in prayer. In the passage in the article, it can be spelled out because in that context, it is a direct quote from the Bible.

This practice and convention stems from the Third Commandment's prohibition of taking the holy name in vain..
