WASHINGTON (AFP) The US Army is abandoning the beret, after a failed 10-year experiment.
The black beret, which proved deeply unpopular with American soldiers, will be replaced by a patrol cap for everyday wear, US Army spokesman Colonel Tom Collins said Monday.
The move came after outgoing Army chief of staff, General Martin Dempsey, asked the army's sergeant major "to go out and talk to soldiers across the force and see what was on their minds," Collins told AFP.
"One of the things that soldiers consistently brought up was the desire to wear the patrol cap as part of their duty uniform," he said.
The beret will still be part of the Army's dress uniform, but will no longer be worn in the field as soldiers complained that it was impractical, he said.
"It does not have a visor and doesn't shield the sun, doesn't absorb sweat well," Collins said.
One soldier put it more bluntly.
"I hate wearing a wet sock on my head," Chief Warrant Officer Mark Vino, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, told the Army Times. "Plus it makes head/skin break out."

Buh-bye clinton inspired Monica cap.
Clintonian asshattery. See ya!

it took our leaders 10 years to figure out we’re practical Americans, not Frenchmen ?
What the f*** is a “Patrol cap”? Are they talking about a fatigue cap?
Berets should be earned by jumping out of planes and eating snakes. It was like giving everybody in class a pass grade so they didn’t hurt anyone’s self esteem.
The black beret should not be part of the dress uniform either. The black beret in the past was for Ranger units. It was earned. Shinseki’a bright idea was an insult to the Rangers. What was to be next, ribbons given out like Skittles? (oops, forgot, one insult to the Navy who got a Purple Heart for getting a splinter while spending Christmas in Cambodia).
Years before I questioned the burnt orange beret of the MFO, a woolen POS with no bill in the scorching desert heat. We were told we might be mistaken for Israeli Rangers if we wore the desert camo boonie hat. My response was the Egyptians would know we weren't IDF Rangers because they (the Gypos) were still alive.
The beret will be back in 10 years. It failed back in the 70s when we were all required to wear a beret of your branch colors. It didn’t last as long that time around.
Known among Marines as a Pisscutter.
The Beret should have been earned, not issued.
Amen! Bring back the khakis.
Bus drivers. Hilarious. I missed the blues as Class A and Class B by a year.
“Patrol cap” is ARMY lingo for good ol fashioned baseball cap!
Yup, the ‘Lewinskies’ are finally going. It was his FU to the military.
Wonder how much this moronic Shinseki boondoggle cost the American taxpayers....
I hated those stinking things that we had to wear at Fort Campbell, Kentucky back in the 1970s. I hated those stinking things. Glad to see them go. I was a patrol cap type hat man myself. Good move.
Iraq 2005...Bronze stars went to E7 and above...given out like PEZ candy!
And now Shinseki runs the VA, which in its infinite wisdom, is going to allow transgendered vets get hormone therapy and mental health care. Meanwhile, our combat vets that need mental health care are getting the shaft.

I believe a pisscutter is a garrison cap (or flight cap to us zoomies).
We used to know it as the soft cap, one each.<< O.D. in color
More shocking by far are the number of rapes committed in VA hospitals.
Hopefully the caps will be MADE IN AMERICA, not like the black berets, which a majority were made in china.
Never liked those friggin UN beret’s.
Yeah I just saw an article about that too.
Here's the one obama probably wants them to wear.
But no matter which cap, I bet it will be made in China.
I left the Army at the end of 1973, and I was not aware of an army wide Beret policy, what years was it?
I think the berets look nice but it does seem they would be impractical.
My Nephew gave me his floppy hat, I guess they were issued to them in basic. I really like it for just walking around the yard etc. as it keeps the sun off. I have noticed it hampers your vision somewhat.
I have heard the old Corinthian helmets worn by the ancient Greeks ran up to 10 pounds. They must have been really tough to wear and it looks like they would have cut down on your vision and hearing. On the other hand, they probably gave really good protection.
HUH???? I’ve never heard of that. Proof?, date, names and VA hospital (s).
No more ‘Monicas’?
‘Bout time . . . used to be worn only by Airborne and Special Forces . . . looks weird on the rest of the regular army
When will the Navy dump that GD “Dixie Cup”?
I guess there’s no chance that they’ll bring the c—t cap back. I really liked that cap.
This is very good news.
However, we always wear the patrol cap during field exercises (the article seemed to imply otherwise).
I can’t wait to ditch that stupid beret. We’re supposed to all wear the same uniform, but no two berets look alike. I wonder if I could get away with buying the service cap and using that instead of the beret with the Army Service Uniform?
I remember yet another name but that happens when you’re part of the totem pole below ground.
Just Google: VA rapes.
This blue suiter knew them by a less flattering name derived from a part of the female anatomy.
(No, not Deloris...)
I flew a mission with a Headquarters Lt.Col. paper pusher ( he wanted to see what it was like)....Damned if he didn't get a purple heart from a piece of hot brass taking him in the chin...Not bitter...just tellin’ it like it is...Career Officers need PEZ!!....patriots do not..
When I got to Jump School an instructor asked, well screamed, ‘Why did you go Airborne?’. My reply was so I didn’t have to wear that damn c-cap, Sergeant!
Only time I saw the guy laugh the whole time I was there.
The beret’s not being “abandoned.” Who wrote this crap?
And for all you Shinseki naysayers—he also spearheaded Army transformation into the far superior BCT system we have today and he was one of the few who was correct on what it would take to win quickly and decisively in Iraq. He was also fired for it.
