Anthony Weiner's Fear: Being Invisible to Women
The Daily Beast ^ | June 14, 2011 | Christopher Dickey

Posted on 06/14/2011 12:38:15 PM PDT by Brandonmark

The fear of aging and being ignored affects the behavior of politicians like Anthony Weiner, stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger—and the rest of us, says Christopher Dickey.

I had lunch recently with a good friend who is a veteran of the CIA and one of those spies who is a study in grays—handsome enough, but always in the background; never the first person you’d notice in a crowded room, and very possibly the last. Given his profession, I thought he wanted to be that way. So I was surprised when, early in the conversation as a college student served us iced tea in the diner, he said to me that one of the worst things about getting older is that you become “invisible to women.” It’s not just that they aren’t interested in you, he said, “it’s that they don’t see you.”

Not many men admit this, I think, although I am sure that many men in their 50s and older, and not a few in their 40s, must feel it. And I suspect that it is this sensation of invisibility that makes some men—especially politicians and actors who have made careers trying to be loved in public–make ridiculous spectacles of themselves as they get older.

Then Weiner should ask to revise and extend his remarks.

Well, women who get older get invisible too. We are all in the same boat.

There are seasons to life. Age gracefully. You don’t always have to be the best looking thing in the room.

He’s too homely and arrogant to be invisible. But he certainly doesn’t have anything attractive about him. Especially his personality. His only way to get chicks hot was his Congressman’s ID. Not that shabby little wiener he so loved.

He’s only got a degree in political science and is not an attorney like a lot of these weasels in congress so absent being a congressman, this guy is qualified to work as a clerk at Macy’s.

I don’t buy this author’s premise at all. I get the feeling Weiner ALWAYS felt invisible to women, that’s why his insecurity led to his twitter behavior. This despite the fact that his political power (the ultimate aphrodisiac) could probably get him any chick in the room at just about any Washington cocktail party. He’s the classic 98 lb. weakling as a teen who got sand kicked in his face and spent the rest of his life trying to overcome it. I doubt Arnold has EVER been invisible to women or felt that way - he’s just a major league horn dog.

You don’t become invisible to women as you age - you become invisible to high school and college girls. Emphasis girls.

They also happen to be mostly invisible to me. All the right parts and yet also very few of the things that make a woman a woman. Nice to look at, but nothing that gets my attention.

This is perfectly natural.

You have to be young and virile to be a father to a child for maybe 18 years.

A young woman knows this, so does not look for a mate that is more than old enough to be her father.

If you cultivate a personality and develop character, aging is fine. If not, then you can't grow old gracefully.... or do anything else gracefully, either.

I go along with Rush’s idea - Weiner has been dominated by liberal women all his life so, when alone, he acts out. His texts were full of dominant/controlling sexual talk - easy to do when not face to face.

The guy is a wus.

If you’re over 40 and want to get a young woman’s attention, just put a wad of $100 bills in your pocket and go to a strip club.

You said it,

The “history” surely has to do with BOYS and all this heterosexual weirdness looks to me like some strange means for Wiener to prove to himself that he really isn’t what he looks and sounds like: an ugly, swishy, little fudgepacker who is having a mid-life crisis involving sexual identity.

It will be hard to prove but I’d bet dollars to doughnut holes (inflation) that up until about age 40 or so, “Tough Tony” was a real sweetie pie.

Too bad Kirsten Powers is a Democrat. I’ll bet she knows a thing or two.

No offense but I doubt that Weinner got much attention from women in his 20’s. The poor guy is just not physically attractive. He probably only started getting lucky after he became a congressman.

I didn’t hear Rush mention that and posted much the same thing myself the other day. The guy feels powerless and less than male so he does totally inappropriate things. Some women have the same problem and act out in the same inappropriate way.

Rarely do you see someone with a character flaw like this who is not stockpiling some more similar dirty linen in his/her closet.

Behavior like this is usually in character rather than out of character.

Just a personal observation after watching too many episodes like this unfold through the years.

Yeah. Married to Mrs. Clinton’s once and probably continuing girlfriend. Mrs. C needed Huma officially out of the house and heterosexually attached to avoid the public perceptions of her own weirdnesses. I am not sure Weiner’s reources could come anywhere near to supportting this highest of maintenance woman.

Weiner just got married. Why would he care about being invisible to women? He is suppose to out of the dating game.

Plus, he’s a high profile congressman, he’s not going to be invisible to anyone.

Weiner isn’t going through a middle life crisis. He’s a prev.

I'm no fan of Michael Savage, but I had him on briefly yesterday and listened to a segment that will go down as a talk radio classic. I'll paraphrase his rambling monologue as best I can:

"I hope Anthony Weiner's parents are both alive and well, and I'd really like to meet them so I can figure out how he ended up this way. Which of your parents did this to you, Congressman Weiner? . . . Hey, Mrs. Weiner -- I know you're out there, and I know you listen to this show . . . because I'm the son you always wished you had. Please call the station so I can ask you a few things about your son!"

This was even more comical because Michael Savage's real last name is Weiner!

His need for continuous attention, photographing himself in mirrors...photographing...uh...himself....seems like narcissistic personality disorder. If so, that would mean he is incapable of a true attachment/love for his wife and that he may feel, ever since he was a child, that if he isn’t getting attention then he’s disappearing. No cure for the disorder - if he stops sending emails of himself then he’d find another way to get attention just to ‘exist’.

I kinda get the same vibe from Arnold - there are parts of the day when he’s not getting constant attention so he acquires it from the maid, if not others. It’s not affection or attraction from or for the maid, it’s attention.

I suspect this guy is talking about young women. Women in his age group probably notice him all of the time, but they are invisible to him, I’ll bet.

Exactly what I say. This guy was a major geek in high school, got no looks from the ladies, so now he is in power, and whattya know? With power comes the ladies. Intoxicating to a nerd/geek.
