Old airfield could host 600 sites, says National Park Service

Roasting marshmallows, telling ghost stories and sleeping under the stars - in New York City?

The National Park Service is planning a 600-site campground in Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field, a onetime airport used by Amelia Earhart. The campground would be the largest urban tent-pitching site in the nation, according to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

"We want to make New York the leading example of what we can do around the country with urban parks," Salazar said.

"The plan is one of several initiatives aimed at improving access to the outdoors in the New York region under President Obama's America's Great Outdoors campaign."

"The location now has just five campsites, but that number will expand to 90 over the next two years and to 600 eventually, he said."

My, my, my. So many are too broke to go on vacation, so the administration brings the vacation to you. Can you imagine camping on an old airfield? In Brooklyn??

Nah, eventually, the barbed wire will keep them out.

A great way to handle the overflow of illegal aliens when they swing open the gates at the border. Just hand out sleeping bags and open a 24/7 triage.

Nothing like sleeping on the ol’ tarmac to bring ya back to nature....should be a wonderful experience for New Yorkers in the summer when the temp in the tents reach 100 or more...also it could be sold as a cheap housing for the underprivileged

People just like you, Mr. Salazar, have already shown us what you can do to urban centers such as Detroit.

I actually think its a good idea.....young people don't have the money for extended stays at hotels, and young families could come and camp by night, and take the kids to the sights during the day....

I predict a big success unless they let it be overrun by criminals...
