NC House Coalition Overrides Perdue's Budget Veto

The North Carolina House voted early Wednesday to override Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's historic veto of the state government budget for the next two years, completing the key step needed for the Republican majority to cancel her objections and enact the plan.
A coalition of Republicans and a handful of Democrats approved the override by a 73-46 vote. That's just enough to meet the three-fifths majority required to overturn her veto Sunday of the budget that spends nearly $19.7 billion for the year beginning July 1.
It clears the path for the Republican-penned bill to be enacted later Wednesday, despite Perdue's repeated and forceful objections.
She says it would deliver "generational damage" to public education and other services that residents rely upon and make the state attractive for private job creation.
Republicans disagree and the Senate planned to hold its override vote later in the day, said leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham. The 31-19 Republican majority is already veto-proof there.
The Republican-led House needed support from at least four Democrats for a successful override. Five Democrats supported the final budget earlier this month and said all along they planned to stick with the GOP, which they did.
Wednesday was the earliest day the House could hold an override vote. Waiting any longer than necessary would be a distraction, House Speaker Thom Tillis said before the vote.
A complete override sets the stage for the General Assembly -- the first under full Republican control in 140 years -- to end its annual session this weekend.
Republicans have said their budget will create jobs, let temporary taxes expire and preserve funds for teacher and teacher assistant positions.

She’s posturing for political theater. The fact is that the state has to live within its means, and if they didn’t waste so much in Raleigh they would not have any trouble actually doing what was necessary.

Ever since she talked about the Pubbie controlled legislature “playing little boy games” I’ve been waiting for the smack down. Gov Dumplin’ just can’t believe she can’t plow her way through a term with no opposition, like Mike “Mo’ Money” Easley did. Even with Obama’s coattail to hang on to, she barely pulled through the election. When she’s gone it’ll be good riddance to stinky garbage, I say.
They had to make some real concessions to get the 5 Democrats on board, but it was an honest compromise, and a huge improvement over the previous year's budget.
Speaker Thom Tillis was first elected after primarying a conservative rep. who made some good stands but had no hope of getting more than a handful of other reps to support him; a 'No' vote in the minority is nice but doesn't accomplish anything. Tillis came in, worked his butt off to elect a Republican majority, and has effected real change.
Crichton - I agree with you. This is a HUGE victory for the people of NC. Perdue got the smackdown that has been long overdue.
Question - why aren’t the 5 Dems who crossed party lines being called moderates or heroic by the press in NC? Rhetorical question.
Cannot wait until November 2012 when we can elect McCrory. Perdue is weak and ineffective.

Can you give us a quick summary on the GOp candidates?
There’s something to be said here in TN (now that we have clear majority control) that if a Governor vetoes, it merely requires a majority vote override. Haslam has yet to veto anything.
He won the nomination over Fred Smith, a state senator from eastern NC, last time around, and underperformed in the east vs Perdue. He has traveled (campaigned, really) extensively around the eastern part of the state to build bridges (figuratively) and garner support.
There have been rumors of other candidates but I'd say a majority of the electorate is already on board with McCrory for another try. He ran a terrific campaign last time around but was swamped by the Obama wave, he's leading Perdue in the polls, and he helped Republican legislative candidates win majorities in both houses in 2010.
