Well said! We have both an American Pit Bull Terriers and a Rotty and they are both slober dogs. Gentle? They are in and among hundreds of people every day at our summer camp and have been for the past 8 years. They are both rescue dogs (I selected carefully from the animal control shelters) which I worked with extensively to ensure that they would be at ease with people of any kind and nature.
I have had dogs all of my life and while that does not qualify anyone to own such breeds, it does at least afford one the opportunity to get to know and understand the very distinct differences which exist in breeds and in the dogs as individuals.
The important thing is time and attention early--- just like with children. They are a very true reflection of just exactlywhat you put into them. Bottom line --- don't expect them to have what you yourself do not have. You cannot give what you do not possess.
The individual dogs I have owned over the years were carefully chosen to blend in well with whatever lifestyle and environment I knew they would be subjected to.
Also, I did not go out to select 'dangerous' dogs to try and prove anything. It was actually the animal control officers who guided me to choose these particular animals. They had already confirmed their peaceful natures and in the case of the Pitt, she already had the run of their office and the yard. She was everyone's friend and was submissive to every dog. I was hesitant at first....just because of the stories like this one.
I agree 100% with your statement. I don't think the average person should ever own a Pitt Bull Terrier. In fact, the average person (that I have observed lately)probably should not have children or own dogs of any breed. They really don't have a clue as to understanding the basics of leadership, guidance, discipline and cultivating a healthy relationship that relies on mutual respect and earned trust.
I love the terrier breed. I have a rattie. Best dog I’ve ever had. This breed is smart, lots of energy, or at least she use to have lots, she’s 13 now. Her personality is like a little clown. She’s hilarious.
I have a rattie. I’d like to get another one. My hubby wants a dog that’s more mid-sized. I like Jack’s and the little French Terrier bulls. We looked into German Shepherds, not mid sized dog but, the females aren’t to big. A great breed that’s been over bred from what I’ve read. Lot’s of hip problems and temperament problems because of the over breeding. You can end up with a dumb Shepherd from what I’ve read. Bigger breed’s don’t live as long either, 10 years or so.
Jack Russells are such wonderful dogs! :-)
Pit Bull Owner = Drunk Driver
You need a lot of energy to raise a Jack. Natures wind up toy, but they are cute...:O)
I don’t think those were pitbulls. I thought they were some sort of bull mastiffs or something or other.
That's nonsense except only to the extent that some dogs need to be put down. My mother bought a Llasa-opso that was just crazy. Inbreeding or something was responsible. I imagine that if that thing would have been a pit-bull someone would have been severely harmed or killed. We ended up giving him to someone else. That guys wife had to beg him not to shoot the dog after it attacked him.
