Perry Road-Tests A Stump Speech
National Journal ^ | 18 Jun 2011 | Reid Wilson

NEW ORLEANS, La.--Republican activists have waited all week to see a front-running presidential candidate. When Texas Gov. Rick Perry took the stage Saturday, they may have finally gotten their glimpse.

In a 20-minute address to about 2,000 activists at the Republican Leadership Conference, Perry decried the Obama administration and even Republicans he blamed for "apologizing" while touting his own record with remarks that sounded conspicuously like a stump speech.

"This administration in Washington that's in power now clearly believes that government is not only the answer to every need, but it's the most qualified to make the most central decisions for every American in every area," Perry said. He called Obama's approach to the economy "an affront to every freedom-loving American and a threat to every private sector job in this country."

"I stand before you today as a disciplined, conservative Texan, a committed Republican and a proud American, united with you in the desire to restore our nation and revive the American dream," he said.

Though he has adamantly denied an interest in running for president for years, Perry's attitude has changed in recent weeks. He has reportedly dispatched aides to Iowa to feel out the political situation in the home of the crucial first caucus. Now, his biggest supporters believe he is likely to enter the presidential race.

"I do think he'll get in. And it won't be because he wants to, it'll be because he thinks he needs to," said Bill Crocker, chairman of the Texas Republican Party. Crocker introduced Perry to members of the Republican National Committee at a luncheon in Dallas last month.

"When it comes to conservative social issues, it saddens me when sometimes my fellow Republicans duck and cover under pressure from the left," he said. "Let's speak with pride about our morals and our values and redouble our efforts to elect more conservative Republicans. Let's stop this downward American spiral."...RINOS need to pay attention.

Perry has used his party's control of Texas's legislature to advance a stridently conservative agenda he can use on the campaign trail. This year alone, Perry's 11th in the governor's mansion, he signed legislation to require plaintiffs who lose lawsuits against corporations to pay additional legal costs and a measure that requires voters to show identification when they show up at the ballot box -- a proposal that earned him a standing ovation. The 2010 midterm elections, he said, were evidence that the GOP has a mandate for such aggressive legislation........Perry has the best record for GOP Governors and I think he would be a good candidate if he decides to get in the race.

That’s not a big deal. Neither is the Guardasil issue, the Trans-Texas Corridor, the sanctuary city thing that Perry just got around to after years, illegals streaming over the border and killing our schools and emergency rooms ( not to mention Texans and police), the franchise tax and other things. I’ve learned none of that matters. You will see. It will be pointed out to you soon.

Nope, what matters is what Perry says. Not what he has or has not done. It’s not like he was ever a Democrat and buddy to Al Gore. We need to listen to what Perry says. He is saying conservative things so he is not a RINO.

Better get that straight. Rah rah rah Perry.....

This guy is obsessed with himself. Almost like John Edwards. His speech was a string of cliches.

I will say this, the Texas conservatives, DO not like him!!

SOME Texas conservatives don't like him. Some do. I was surprised at the strong support he has among some of the most conservative Texans I know. My take--Perry is a professional politician. As such, he is a little too enamored with what government can do for people and not worried enough about what government does to people. He shares that fault with several others.

Compared to the rest of the field (which I generally like), he is pretty strong. I put him ahead of anyone from Congress because he has successful EXECUTIVE experience in a state that has suffered as little as any other state from Obama's failed recovery. I would rather have Palin, or maybe Cain, but I would take Perry in a minute. Like Romney, he looks presidential (and has good hair--LOL). But he is way more conservative than Romney or Bush and is highly electable. (Yes, I know the Northeast won't vote for a Texan, but they won't vote for any republican.)

The way I heard this, was that his ceremonial attendance had to do with their Eagle Scout program and Perry is an ardent Eagle Scout.

Naturally, liberal Dallas Morning News slanted the story to make Perry look bad, as usual.

I will say you speak for yourself, certainly not for ALL Texas Conservatives.

Of course a Gov. Medina would be liked by all, right?

And we will do what it takes to sink him, both in the primaries and the general election if he makes it that far.

If the GOP sticks to the left in 2012, then there will be a viable third party by 2016.
