NY Target store workers reject unionization Workers at NY Target store reject unionization, but union says it will press on nationwide

Ellen Gibson, AP Retail Writer, On Saturday June 18, 2011, 6:08 am EDT NEW YORK (AP) -- Workers at a Target store in New York voted against joining the country's largest retail union Friday night, but the union said it would press on and broaden its push to represent the company's workers nationwide.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 also said it would contest the results and ask the federal government to order a new election, alleging that Target illegally intimidated workers. Target denied the union's allegations.

Both sides said the workers at Target's Valley Stream store voted 137-85 against unionization. A "yes" vote would have made the store the first of the company's 1,700 locations to bring in organized labor.

"Target did everything they could to deny these workers a chance at the American Dream," said Bruce W. Both, president of United and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500, in a statement. "However, the workers' pursuit of a better life and the ability to house and feed their families is proving more powerful. These workers are not backing down from this fight. They are demanding another election."

Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said the company acted legally.

"Target absolutely believes we have followed all the policies and procedures that are outlined by the National Labor Relations Board in a completely lawful manner," Snyder said.

Wonderful news! Although, NLRB must be preparing a lawsuit.

Unions destroy every business and/or industry that they infect. Everyone who votes to unionize should at least understand this as they vote. Historical fact is historical fact.

Maybe they learned the lesson from Wal-Mart in Canada(Montreal?); when they voted to unionize, the store was simply closed. Now they are united in unemployment...

They did that too to my neighborhood in Vancouver BC before I left for the 57 states. The commie bastards on the city council made Wal Mart lives so miserable they made sure they were on the outskirts of the metro area.

They were there to protect the canadian version of WM which is Zellers.

The funny part? Zellers has been bought out by Target. And because PM Harper is a conservative, now’s the best time to handle those union thugs and give em a dose of their own medicine.

A lot of people work at a Target or Walmart part-time or after retirement for a little extra cash. Why should they have to be strapped with union dues?

Also, when I was in college I had some friends whose parents worked at the local Miller brewery. They all got summer jobs paying about $15.00 an hour, this in the early 90’s. They were telling us how great it was as they really didn't do anything. Until they got their first checks and saw how much went directly to the union! The brewery closed a few years later and left tons out of work. All their union did was take and left the workers high and dry.

By rejecting the Union Thuggery, they “created and saved” their own jobs. Unions have outlived their usefulness. They are now simply money-laundering fronts for the Democrat Party.

This is one of the most blatantly biased articles that I have ever read. It consists mainly of quotes from unions and supporters. Why would a “news” article about a vote in New York discuss a “small protest” in Arkansas?

“Target did everything they could to deny these workers a chance at the American Dream,”

Here’s a statement that, coming from a union organizer, we know is complete crap without ever looking at any evidence. Nothing a union does has anything to do with “The American Dream”!

I would like to work on this headline.. Unions collectively emptied their coffers during Obama’s election. Now with one empty pocket, they desperately attempt to take advantage of the bad economy to promise workers anything for union fees. Most especially in states that are not “right to work” . They know they must come up with mo money for 2012, so they are blitzing. Union bumper sticker: I heart mandatory union dues.

As opposed to the unions legally intimidating the workers to vote FOR the unions.

"Target did everything they could to deny these workers a chance at the American Dream," said Bruce W. Both,
Yeah, right Brucie.
I guess (Cue Spooky Music) 'Management', Water-boarded 62% of the workers so they'd vote NO.

ps: Brucie, can I have some of what you're smoking?

This is one of the most blatantly biased articles that I have ever read.

Wait until the end of the month and there will be 2 or 3 local construction unions going on strike in NY city. In this economic climate, is there any justification for striking? They should be damn lucky to even have a job at this point.

I don’t understand this. The Unions say they are “for the worker.” These workers don’t want to join. Continuing to press them is against the workers’ desires, it seems to me.

Reminds me of a kid who followed me through a store parking lot to try to sell me “magazine subscriptions.” I kept saying no; he kept pressing. I finally had to tell him, “Look, I’m not going to give you a penny. Why don’t you spend your time looking for someone else who might?”

The Union needs to move on to another pigeon who might be more ripe for the plucking and leave Target alone.

What bothers me about this is the UFCW..lost the vote, and yet they rush off to the courthouse for a “do-over”.

Very Liberal of them, keep filing lawsuits until you win.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union is underrated for the amount of underhanded , dirty and illegal tactics they use, including sending members to Wal-Mart stores to fill carts with perishable goods, abandon the cart and walk out of the store. This has happened in stores in my area resulting in thousands of dollars of meat and other goods to have to be thrown away.

Wal-Marts policy is to throw away all such goods as they have no way of being sure just how long the goods have sat unrefrigerated.

These workers who rejected the union were smart... but it would be wise of Target to give really lousy schedules to the workers who pushed for unionization... just in case anyone else wants to try this again.

Sounds like perfect justification for a SLAPP suit. If these thugs are going to fight dirty, then the only thing that will defeat them is more dirty fighting.

I learned about unions first hand when I was in high school in the mid 1960s
I worked PT in a grocery store and was forced to join the North American Meat Cutters Union (IIRC).
Once I was "unionized" I received a 10 cents per hour raise ($2 week), and my union dues were $2 a week. Such a deal.

That's what I was thinking too... Target did make it clear that there was no guarantee that the store would stay open if it became unionized. Perhaps the workers wisely took heed of this not-so-subtle warning.

On another note... I remember reading somewhere that whenever a union would try to organize a McDonald's in Canada, McDonald's would simply hire a bunch of extra "workers" to work just for the day of the vote... and vote no. :)
