Texas rave leaves one dead, dozens in hospital

A 19-year-old man has died in Dallas after an overnight rave party ended in chaos, a spokesman for the Texas city's fire department said Sunday.

Rescuers responded to a series of 911 calls from the Electric Daisy Carnival event for emergencies related to drugs, alcohol and excessive heat, spokesman Jason Evans said.

Some 20 to 25 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with one reported to be in critical condition. The cause of death for the man who died is not yet known.

The emergency calls had begun as early as 9 p.m. Saturday with at least 10 different rescue units sent to the scene at the Centennial Building in Fair Park, Evans said.

"The chaos finally came to a rapid stop when someone pulled a fire alarm around 1:30 a.m. and sent those remaining scattering," he added.

Two citations were issued by fire inspectors, one for overcrowding and another for failure to obey the order of the fire marshal. His request for a half-hour halt in the music to help manage the crowd was refused, Evans said.

Rave? Used to be a competent newspaper would define the terms used by an insignificant, fringe subculture.

Ecstasy, pot, booze and 103 heat in a crowd.

Brilliant.

It’s a wonder only one died.
Folks underestimate the heat around here.

Officially it’s just a style of entertainment with lights and music. Unofficially it lends itself to being spiced up with drugs.

That’s what I found. There’s no meaningful, non-nebulous definition unless you refer to the drug use involved - the “unofficial” definition. Otherwise, it’s just a “party.”

The idea seems to be to mimic, as far as can be done with external sensual stimuli, the experience of a drug trip. It does not usually work well to that end because it cannot fog your mind.

From my understand, it mixes loud, bassy electronic music with fairly baggy pants (actually not jeans), and a loooooot of glow sticks. It’s almost its own dance style.

Both the music and all the glow doodads are chosen to enhance the effects of the drug that defines the rave scene, X or ecstasy. Infant pacifiers are or were an odd but frequently seen accessory, too. Not just a weird affectation, the drug causes users to grit their teeth and the pacifier gives them something to chew upon.

First rave I ever heard of in the US was in Houston, at least two decades ago. Baggy pants are more hiphop. Rave scene would be skinny jeans if there is any sort of set style of pants. It’s really more of a free-for-all in that sense and in more ways than that.

You’d have to have been there to understand it. I was, don’t participate in that sort of thing anymore since returning to God and becoming Christian. Last rave I attended was an outdoor multi-day affair over Labor Day 1999 in the Bay Area.

A dangerous side effect of the rave drug of choice, ecstasy, is elevated heart rate, elevated blood pressure and heat stroke. The drug did it, as far as the one death, would be my guess. Very hot weather would exacerbate the problem.

Well I was referring to these pants.

Used to own two of them when I was a teenager; got black and gray on sale for $15 each.

Ravers ually candyflip at these events. According to wikipedia, a “candyflip” is where “a person takes LSD, then an hour or two later, they take MDMA”. Doing that is NOT good for your brain, and can lead people to do stupid things that could lead to injuries, illness, and/or death.
