I heard they were questioning 2 people that had camped there and neglected to put out their campfire all the way.
That was 2 days ago when I was almost right in the middle of the fire - I was less than 5 miles from it in AZ and heard this on an AZ radio station.
Rumor on the street here in torched country is that the BP has video of drug runners setting the damned thing as a diversion. And we burn....

Monument Fire started close to the border in an area that had been closed to campers, hikers etc. The area has tons of illegal traffic. They have already determined it was human caused. Even if it is proved to be caused by illegals, the national agencies will never say it due to PC. Odds are it is exactly what Dever and Mc Cain have said.
This is a typical liberal question- did the illegals set all the fires? No of course not, did they set some of the fires- very likely since they do it all the time. Lack of awareness of the border situation- media won’t listen, won’t do their research, won’t report due to PC, you name it. Illegals setting fires is NOT new, it is common knowledge of anyone that is familiar with the border issues. They set fires for warmth, cooking, and as a diversion for smuggling activities. The only “new” thing is it is so dry any fire is likely to get out of control and become a major issue. That and many do not want to admit that illegals regularly have and do cause fires, just not PC don’t you know?
But explained McCain, federal personnel have told him for years and years that ILLEGALS do set fires all the time.

And what if the evidence is there- and they don’t want to release it? When the Horseshoe 2 fire started, Border Patrol said they were pursuing smugglers and the smugglers set the fire as a diversion, BP caught the smugglers. Early media reports said illegals started the Horseshoe 2 fire- then up the food chain at Border Patrol they would not confirm that illegals set the fire, in fact the BP started telling people to call Forest Service for questions about the fire. Locals in the area were trying to find out if the smugglers would be charged with setting the fire and BP didn’t want to deal with all the press and fall out- that is why they clammed up.
Illegals do set fires all the time and when they are caught they are usually charged with the normal charges for illegals or smuggling, not usually charged with setting fire. If you or I start a fire we will be charged and if the fire is a large one we will be named in the media, and the government will attempt to make us pay for the cost of the fire.
Do illegals start all the fires? Of course not, but when the shoe fits they should darn well have to wear it, just as everyone else has to. There should be no sliding out of things just because you are here illegally. Some times it is just obvious if a fire starts in a remote location where illegal traffic is heavy and the fire is determined to be human caused. In places where there is normal legal hiking, camping activity it is not so clear- but some of the areas are basically owned by smugglers and illegals so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which group of humans are the cause of some fires.
