With little fanfare or controversy, the Senate on Tuesday unanimously confirmed Leon Panetta as the next Defense secretary as a debate rages in Washington over the cost and scope of military operations abroad.
Panetta, President Barack Obama’s CIA director, succeeds Robert Gates, who has led the Pentagon since late 2006 and is retiring at the end of the month.
Panetta’s confirmation comes just a day before Obama’s major address on the Afghanistan war in which he is expected to announce he’ll withdraw all 33,000 “surge” troops from the region by the end of 2012. In addition to the troop drawdown, Panetta will have to contend with lawmakers on Capitol Hill who are seeking to restrict Obama’s military operations in Libya.
The 100-0 vote revealed how well respected Panetta is on both sides of the aisle. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called it a “home-run choice,” saying the president made a “very wise decision.”

Exactly. WAAAAAAY too many people on FR are ideologues. I am just as conservative as they are...but I know how to make sausage.
What many freepers would have done is to take some kind of ideological stand and filibustered Panetta. The end result would have been someone FAR WORSE because there was no way in HELL that Obama was going to nominate someone to OUR liking.
Bottom line is you have to have a SECDEF. You can't filibuster every nominee...then you lose the country. And what good would that do ya? I swear...I think some Freepers are DUmmy plants. There strategic skills for winning the war are frightening.
Your link doesn’t show Leon Panetta to be a communist, it shows he had correspondence with a constiuent (a former congressman from Washington state) who was. It’s also useful to note that said constituent has been dead for 30 years.

That's true. He's obviously not going to be as good a choice as a Republican because he is a Democrat. But he's not nearly as bad as many other in his party, and has done as decent a job as could be expected at the CIA.
Interestingly, he used to be a Republican.
