Editorial: Who OK'd 'Guns To Gangs' Program, And Why?

Law: After getting caught doing the unbelievable — arming Mexico's cartels — word is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms boss is out, and the gun-controller the White House wanted all along is in. How far up does this go?

Acting ATF director Kenneth Melson is apparently ready to take the fall for what may be the most morally repulsive scandal to befall the Obama administration so far.

Our neighbor Mexico lies bleeding from a long, vicious war to fight seven major drug cartels at once. Some 38,000 have been left dead since 2006.

Amid all this, U.S. ATF agents had orders from on high to supply U.S. weapons to cartel middlemen buying them on U.S. soil for the odd purpose of "tracing" them.

The news that Melson is resigning seems to be a bid by the Obama administration to paint this as simply an example of Keystone Kop-style bungling being corrected.

But many things suggest the operation may have been done for political purposes, and not merely stupidity.

The idea behind "Operation Fast and Furious" was to let gun dealers sell weapons to cartel middlemen, who would then ship them to criminal gangs in Mexico, and damn the consequences.

The operation was so contrary to the goals of ATF that its agents repeatedly raised anguished protests — only to be rebuffed from their superiors, according to testimony presented to House Oversight Committee chair Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who is investigating the scandal.

That’s a pretty solid “trace,” huh guys? Turned up some pretty “interesting” information there, didn’t ya?

What's more outrageous is that several ATF agents sounded the alarm about law enforcement and civilians being slaughtered with these weapons.....their superiors said "you have to break a few eggs to make an omlet."

That is straight from ATF testimony!

This is a Second Amendment issue - foreign gangs have a right to bear arms provided by the US government.

Too late to lure Mr. Melson to a park.....So the President’s stooges need to use something they appear to have little of, tact. I suspect it won’t take much to drive Melson into Rep. Issa’s office seeking a plea deal that’ll let him keep his pension and walk.

I can’t see any way for USAG Holder to skate on this one, either. His performance before Rep. Issa’s Committee was a stumbling rambling lacking any substantive fact. IOW, similar to his subordinate Ron Welch’s.

Its taken over six months, but the MSM is finally smelling blood. How long before one or more start looking to see if BATF offices outside AZ are also “walking” guns ? Several are already opining this government operation seems more tailored to supporting the President’s anti-gun agenda than any legitimate law-enforcement purpose. >PS

Once Issa gets his “in camera” meeting with DoJ, all this will dry up and blow away in the wind. To believe otherwise is total naivete. Our government has relinquished all credibility.

I think it is another stupid lib anti-gun PR scam gone South.

On an evil scale of 1 to 10, that would put barry at about a "2." You know he's much worse than that.

*THERE* it is, yet again. That infamous "omelet ala Marx" recipe. After literally millions of eggs being 'broken', for which read people being killed, and a fair number of 'kitchens', for which, read nations, laid waste or otherwise ruined, isn't it about high time that this particular recipe was 'round-filed', *PERMANENTLY*?
