Lawrence O'Donnell Accuses Michele Bachmann of Being a Socialist
NewsBusters ^ | 06/22/2011 | Noel Sheppard

Lawrence O'Donnell on Tuesday accused Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) of being a socialist.

"The Last Word" host, who has admitted on national television to himself being a socialist, did so by cherry-picking from an article published at the perilously liberal website "The Huffington Post" (video follows with commentary and full transcript at end of post):

LAWRENCE O'DONNELL: Michele Bachmann, as has been pointed out in this space before, has a family farm that has received over a quarter of million dollars in direct cash from the federal government. That is, of course, in addition to her federal salary of $174,000 for her real full-time job as a member of Congress. Thanks to Sam Stein at the Huffington Post today, with we now have yet another example of Bachmann political dependence, career dependence on socialism.

The Huffington Post obtained a letter Bachmann wrote on October 5th, 2009, to the Obama administration’s Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack thanking him for government intervention in the pork industry. That's right, government intervention in the market. She wrote, “Your efforts to stabilize prices through direct government purchasing of pork and dairy products are very much welcomed.”

Yes. This is the same woman who said this about the Democrats' health care reform bill.

“They just want a government that advocates on behalf of their specific agenda. The same can be said of some social conservatives as well.”

######

Hmmmmm,

Don’t want babies killed. ANY babies.

Don’t want government to enable the mainstreaming of perversion.

If that “agenda” is “specific” to me, I mourn for our country.

care to explain how this is a total lie?

did she or did she not write that letter?

Are these her words or are they making it up?

On Oct. 5, 2009, Bachmann wrote Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack praising him for injecting money into the pork industry through the form of direct government purchases. She went on to request additional assistance.

“Your efforts to stabilize prices through direct government purchasing of pork and dairy products are very much welcomed by the producers in Minnesota, and I would encourage you to take any additional steps necessary to prevent further deterioration of these critical industries, such as making additional commodity purchases and working to expand trade outlets for these and other agricultural goods,” Bachmann wrote.

It is not necessarily hypocritical to advocate for changing policies while continuing to benefit from them personally or through your constituents.

Some of us think the mortgage deduction has been a real problem in distorting the real estate market and should be reduced or eliminated. Yet I suspect pretty much all of us continue to take advantage of it while it is still in effect.

If old enough, most of us probably accept our social security checks despite having spent decades advocating for reform of the program.

I have read posts where freepers decry the bad effect of having senators elected directly rather than by the state legislatures. But they still probably vote directly for the senator of their choice.

But you get my point.

I love this line from the Newsbusters article:

And, such purchases are nothing new. As the National Pork Producers Council notes, it's been going on since 1935:

Great. Let's fall back on New Deal policies as justification for Bachmann's comment.

Produce the letter. Since the “Family farm” meme is prove a lie by the fact her family owes no farm, the burden of proof on this supposed quote from a supposed letter rests with the accusers, not the accused.

Innocent until prove guilty is the principal here. Not up to us to prove every smear attack by every scum bag Leftist a fraud. They are prove liars, therefore without proof the rest of their accusations are assumed lies until proof is offered.

You just can’t ever address the topic, can you? And you yet again drag Palin into a thread that has nothing to do with Palin.

Newsbusters does not call into question the letter in an otherwise sympathetic article.

The left is playing ‘divide and conquer’ with the Republican candidates for the GOP presidential nomination. Lawrence O’Donnell doesn’t give a rat’s patoot whether Michele Bachmann is a ‘socialist’ or not but he is just smart enough to know the accusation will resonate with the few conservatives that see/hear/read it. He’s hoping to help turn conservative, Tea Party voters against Michele Bachmann and perhaps help Romney, Huntsman or even Pawlenty. He will fail because although Michele Bachmann has her faults, she is no socialist. The none-too-bright Lawrence O’Donnell went a bridge too far in attempting to smear Bachmann with a lie based on scanty evidence. Of course, should Sarah Palin chose to run, I’m confident that dopes such as Lawrence O’Donnell will call her a communist. The guy is a lightweight nitwit, which is why he’s on MSNBC with an audience that is barely a third of Fox News staple and ratings king, Bill O’Reilly.

I wonder where bachmann found government intervention into markets in her Von Mises?

When I ask who she reads on the subject, she responds that she admires the late Milton Friedman as well as Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams. "I'm also an Art Laffer fiend—we're very close," she adds. "And [Ludwig] von Mises. I love von Mises," getting excited and rattling off some of his classics like "Human Action" and "Bureaucracy." "When I go on vacation and I lay on the beach, I bring von Mises."

Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises (German pronunciation: [ˈluːtvɪç fɔn ˈmiːzəs]; September 29, 1881 – October 10, 1973) was an Austrian-American economist, historian, philosopher, author, and classical liberal who had a significant influence on the modern free-market libertarian movement and the Austrian School.

This poster posted this, you ain’t stupid, to start another hate Bachmann thread. The least you need to do is be honest. Its telling because Palin fans love to back up what the left says about Bachmann.

I don’t think anyone around here has acccused Palin of being a socialist and then jumped on to offer comfort to the left.

If that were true, they would have been zotted.

Nice rant. Now, care to address the topic of the article? Namely, Bachmann being grateful for government intervention?

I guess you don't want to address it. Best to rant about Palin instead.

In today's politics, it doesn't matter if the charge is true or not, or whether the accuser believes it or not.

It's all about disrupting the message. When O'Donnell makes a charge like this, he's hoping to put Bachmann on the defensive, and he's hoping she will respond in a way that opens up additional questions.

For example, Bachmann, whoes FATHER IN LAW owns a farm, has nothing to do with that farm.

Not enough degrees of separation. Daughter and FIL are close enough to create a conflict of interest. It would have been the proper thing for her to vote against (or abstain) if that is in fact what she has done.

sure you hav ein the past in fact you are doing it now.

One ACES isn’t a windfall profit tax , it is more like a royality payment that goes up as the price of oil goes up not the profits of the company. It is tagged to the price of oil not compnaies profits. so just you using that attack is you agreeing with the left,

Horsefeathers ,Aces is a nice new name for a windfall profit tax. Thats why the current Governor is trying to kill it. He wants to kill it because it is killing the industry.
