Famed crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger arrested in Santa Monica

Legendary Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who has been on the run for more than a decade, was arrested Wednesday in Santa Monica, multiple law enforcement sources told The Times.

Bulger, 81, has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for "The Departed," a 2006 Martin Scorsese film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.

Bulger fled Boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with 21 killings, racketeering and other crimes that spanned the early 1970s to the mid-1980s.

He was arrested by the FBI inside a building without incident, according to the sources, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. The details surrounding his arrest were unclear Wednesday night.

A lot of folks in Boston are panicking. Especially down at the local office of the FBI.

In particular Mayor Menino, Jim McGovern, Tommy Finneran, Jim Olver and Barney Frank. But one thing you can count on in MA is even if a dem is proved to be dirty they'll go up in the polls because they had the guts to stand up to those nasty Republicans who were mean enough to smear them with the truth.

Yep Big Al. BTW the crime rate was just about zero when those guys ran Springfield. You could walk down Main Street at midnight and be safe. Now Springfield is one of the top ten cities for crime. You can’t walk down Main St. in the middle of the day.

I was just back about 2 weeks ago now, and yes it is getting almost Detroit-ish. State Street right near the old Irish bar and AG Ewards brokerage is almost a dilapidated ghost town. What a shame in the early 80's had an apartment up on the hill near all the doc's and then Milton Bradley. I could walk to the gym, grab a bite, or walk to a nightclub. It was a great city.

I wonder though if it was honor amongst thiefs you noted that kept a lid on it, or is the cities changing demographics and lack or real manufacturing employment that has caused such a slide. Don't get me wrong, the corruption that broke the city didn't help.

BTW, I got to see the effects of the Tornado up around Springfield College. the devistation darn near took my breath away./

Old Agawam gal here, who used to work for lawyers
at Court Square in the summer. I remember the name
of Matty Ryan well. The New England mob .. sure was well sprinkled and a force around Springfield with their notorious lieutenants: Big Nose Sam, Skyball Scibelli.

Main St. and the South End were devasted by the
recent horrendous tornado. Might be a good thing,
after all. It was a steaming pit of big and small time thug crime and uneducated/unemployed immigrants who constantly victimized the whole region.

Yes, that’s true.

I saw Peter Limone in the North End about 3 weeks ago, I wonder how he feels today.

Hardly a gun moll worthy of Tony Soprano.

So what are the odds that Whitey gets shived in prison before he can talk?

* Whitey apparantly like fugly broads. Supposedly he's also a switch hitter.

* He'll be put in solitary, just like Flemmi is. No shiving.

* Most of the cops/FBI/etc. are either dead, retired or took deals to save their asses. The grand prize would be to take down Billy Bulger, but I don't see that happening. Jimmy will just stand mute. Although OK and FL would love to fry him. I suppose he could try to lie and get John Connolly out of the clink, but again, who the Hell is going to believe one word Bulger utters?

* As far as putting the squeeze on Creig goes, she's already been in a virtual prison with the murdering scum for decades, what's 5 years in the clink? IMO, her sister dimed them out and she'll have a $2.1 million dollar, taxpayer funded severance package waiting for her when she gets out. She can get her boobs redone and her hair dyed forever with scratch like that.

Actually, Billy Bulger was the long-time President of the State Senate. He was also a pro-life hero in that body and provided first rate trial lawyers from his law firm to represent people in Operation Rescue Boston, people who occupied Boston are abortion mills to prevent many killings. Billy may not be perfect but he does have some very worthwhile credits.

Howie Carr is an entertaining writer and genuinely talented but he is no movement conservative. An analogy might be that one has a world class looker for a daughter but she insists on taking her clothes off provocatively on stage before strange men for some substantial money. She might even go for the really big money as a high class hooker. She certainly looks good (for now) but you don't want to praise her every employment decision as wise.

In the Commonwealth of Taxachusetts, there are an awful lot of miscreants starting with the militant pro-aborts such as the late Ted Kennedy and John Kerry and Deval Patrick. Billy is low on the list and has mitigating qualities. His brother Whitey is said to have been involved in 19 killings (virtually none as innocent as an unborn child). Multiply by five to cover an exaggerated number of murders of which Whitey is not suspected and he is an absolute piker comared to the average pro-abort politico in Massachusetts or elsewhere. Perhaps, now that Whitey has been arrested at 80 years of age, Howie Carr can turn his attention to and his talents against the abortion mill perps with as much gusto.

You are correct. My bad. I had Sal DiMasi and Tommy Finneran on the brain. But, of course, both houses of the Massachusetts legislature are corrupt.
