Pelosi Prediction Backfires? Glitches Arise in Health Law
by Shannon Bream | June 22, 2011
Back in March 2010, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif,, uttered the now-famous words, "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy." Pelosi was talking about the health care law, and it appears she was right about the fact that it was full of unknowns.
It turns out that, due to a glitch in the law, roughly three million middle-income Americans could wind up on Medicaid - which was designed to assist the country's poorest citizens.
"It's gonna cost about $450 billion over 10 years," Senator John Barrasso. R-Wyo., who is also a surgeon, warns. Barrasso says it's yet another burden for average Americans. "Who's gonna pay for that - the taxpayers, people who are paying their bills every day," he says.
Democrats acknowledge there is a problem within the health care law that could have an unintended impact on Medicaid.
"I do think that between now and 2014, sooner rather than later, we should go back and take another look at this," Congressman Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said Wednesday. Van Hollen also admitted that the potential snafu was discussed while the health care law was being drafted. It stems from a problem about how the word "income" is defined under the law now - and how that definition is set to change.
Richard S. Foster, Chief Actuary for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, says it's a worry that keeps him up at night. "We need to do something about this," he said.
The Obama administration, via a blog, concedes there is trouble.

“We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it”
Just like a stool sample!
It’s not a glitch. A bunch of communists who want to kill private insurance and free enterprise (and a bunch of people) wrote the legislation - it was put there on purpose.
Someone once described the old style toilets (from before Congress started dictating toilet design) as being capable of handling “an act of Congress”.
The Libs look at this as a Feature, not a Bug. Single-payor, here we come.
“We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.”
It was an idiotic and shocking statement the first time I heard it and it has become even more unspeakably disgraceful and appalling upon repetition!!
When I heard it the first time, I immediately envisioned General Washington and the heroic, costly and by no means assured American struggle against the Crown rule. The efforts and sacrifices of all those colonists, politicians and soldiers bought us our freedom. The Founding Fathers positively agonized over their work to guarantee colonists representation in the governing process.
It is frightening and shameful just how far Nancys statement has departed from this!!
And the Liberals in America didn’t even blink as they carelessly chose this most asinine and idiotic path to pass their ‘plan’ !!!
I agree. Go back, take another look, and KILL IT.
Unreal
Yes instead of flushing one time, you have to flush two or three times for the same result now.
I have one of those in my house, which I refuse to use. I’ve named it Albert.
Correct! It goes along with their plan to burn the country to the ground. They will not rest until we are in ashes.
Over 600 comments and not many in support of the bill.
What a perfect analogy.
Pelosi is the epitome of arrogance and stupidity. I do not wish good things for that treacherous woman.
You are absolutely right. This is the section Obama showed Dennis Kucinich in their closed-door meeting when he was going to vote against it due to the lack of a public option.
Just like a jar of Ragu....it’s in there!
“We will pass this bill even if it costs us our jobs.”
This is a much more nefarous statement if you think about it. On the surface, it make her look like a caring martyr.
When you consider that the only was she gets fired is by a vote of the people, you see that she does not care what the people want.
One day we must get around to purging fascists from our land.
