Airbus is trouncing Boeing in their race to be the world's biggest planemaker, claiming over $72 billion worth of orders and commitments at the Paris Air Show, where the popularity of its new fuel-efficient jets twice broke records for the largest order ever.
Airbus CEO Tom Enders and AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes signed off Thursday on an $18.5 billion order for 200 of Airbus' new A320neo, which has proven to be the star of the aviation industry's premier event.

So the 380 tearing its wingtip off wasn’t so bad afterall.
At least Airbus does not have some agency telling them where they can and cannot build factories.
Airbus does this every year at Farnborough and Paris (alternating years.)
They save up order announcemens for the air shows, while Boeing simply announces sales as they happen.
Not a big deal.
At least Boeing is not facing this sort of embarrassment.

Airbus flew a double-decker Airbus A380 to the 2011 Paris Airshow to put on display and to hopefully attract additional customers. However, while taxiing, the world’s largest airliner’s wing clipped a building ripping off the right winglet and putting the aircraft out of service and unable to fly.

I have been watching these for 25 years, and that is exactly what happens. I don't think I have ever seen an Airshow headline go the other way. Boeing is doing just fine - with commercial airplane production rates highest in its history.

No kidding. 200 new aircraft that are NOT going to be built by union employees of Boeing.
Bet they are really happy with the union leadership and the NLRB.

Both companies announce at major shows.
Boeing is losing single aisle share to Airbus due to NEO, and will not catch up until they announce 737 replacements.
They were ordered by Air Asia, a Malaysia based LCC.
They started out with 737's, but switched to Airbus a while back. The NEO provides better fuel economy, many airlines are bleeding red ink due to oil prices,
Boeing's recalcitrance on updating the 737 is fueling NEO sales, and may cause even more carriers to switch to Airbus.
Most airlines want their fleets to be all one brand, simplifying MRO, which is nearly as big a price factor as initial purchase.
Are the unions here going to go to Intenational Court to sue Airbus?
Announcing at an air show is great publicity for the buyer, and it's usually the Asian carriers who like this flash.
But if you look at the total order book for 737s and A320 NEOs, you'll see why Boeing isn't in a panic to jump on the NEO bandwagon.
The 737 has enjoyed a performance margin over the A320. NEO closes this gap, but doesn't surpass the 737.
I deal with both every day. The EU can be the biggest PITA towards business there can possibly be. Boeing doesn’t do itself any favors with all its PC garbage but when trying to work with Airbus and EU companies it is a disaster in most cases. The fact that they can even produce anything that flies is amazing.

Yes Airbus may be wining the larger share of new orders, but to keep up with market demand and an unbelievable backlog of over 2100 737s waiting to be built, Boeing is building 35 737s month in 2011 and will produce 42 737 airplanes per month by mid-2014.
Putting that number in perspective, Boeing built 14 a month in 2003, 17 in 2004, 21 in 2005, and a record 28 a month in 2007.
And the backlog in 2001 was less than a thousand airplanes in the backlog. With over 2100 now, Boeing must turn them out faster just to have spots to put new orders.
Boeing 737 is alive and well.
