BBC News ^ | 24 June 2011 | Kate McGeown

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said Washington is committed to the defence of the Philippines, amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.

She said the US would honour its mutual defence pact with Manila and offer the Philippines affordable weapons.

Several Asian nations claim territory in the South China Sea; Chinese ships have recently encroached on areas to which others have declared ownership.

...

The Philippines has complained of nine separate Chinese incursions into its territorial waters since late February, and Vietnam has also accused China of harassment in the region.

The area around the small Spratly and Paracel islands is hotly contested because it is thought to be rich in oil and gas.

Defense of the Phillipines? Hopefully it’ll work better than it did in ‘41/’42.

I’ll bet it puts the Filipinos at ease to know that Hillary is behind them.

Zero's administration is now engaged in the process of how best to back down and throw our allies (and allies of convenience) under the bus.

They'll want something that A) pertains to Libya (but not Syria or Iran); B) that involves Israel (but not Israel's enemies, the nearby jihadists); and C) that leaves Europe out in the cold. No, really, keep watchin'!

Vietnam complains about China? They did not mind at all when the Chinese sent advisors to assist Hanoi in killing South Vietnamese. What do I have to say about the encroachment of China on neighbors? I do not care. The Domino theory is dead. It never was true. The John Kerry types told us so. Screw them all.

unless Obambi gets re-elected. Which can happen if we squabble too much over the person and choose the best candidate who can win — I’m thinking a Bachman-Cain ticket is pretty good.

No different from how “we Westerners” now selects to play bedfellow and lover to that which was once our deadliest of enemy and most hated of rival.

These VC’s caused the deaths of 50,000 of our men; they cost us insurmountable political division at home; they also made us incurred a billing so hefty it probably affected us economically just as our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan does.

Of course, we returned them the favor with the doing in, probably, of 500,000 of their boy’s in uniform over the course of a decade; 5,000,000 in all if you consider the collateral damages (civilians) and the KIA counts of both the northern and southern factions, not to mention the hundreds of millions of lives ruined and families destroyed.

The ripple affects of peaceful and picturesque whitecaps http://photos3.fotosearch.com/bthumb/CLT/CLT005/kr84625.jpg that affectionately caresses’ the shores of the western Pacific touches only the sands and the rock cliffs along the shores of the western Pacific.

But, the after affects of a massive tectonics disturbance (aka a US/ChiCom face off), have the potentials of creating ocean swells http://weeklyworldnews.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/japanese_tsunamic.jpg?w=325&h=216 that rips across the whole of the Pacific north, east, west and south...

Damn! It just hit me!

In the last election I was the Republican Alternate Judge in a heavily dim precinct. About one third of the voters were Vietnamese immigrants who spoke little or no English. However, they were being herded into voting a straight dim ticket by the dim Vietnamese speaking Clerk.

The Republicans need to rally ALL of the threatened ethnic blocs to vote pubbie in 2012. That includes Indians, Vietnamese, Philipinos, et al.

This has to be done in a way that does NOT threaten our Chinese immigrants. But taking a stand against Chinese bullying and imperialism is not only the right thing to do, it can help win an election!

How "DRAMATIC" :)! BTW, did you forget to drop the hyphen in it or sumpthin'??? I mean the words [Chinese bullying] that is... for example... "taking a stand against Chinese-bullying" Yeah, these weaklings... the ChiCom's I mean -- they are such easy pickin's that even the VietComs and the Abū Sayyāf's are taking them as a joke. Goes with the territory of being a second tier muscle of the block I guess :) ... Go for it, President Nguyễn!!! Go for it President Benigno!!! I dare you guys!!!!

I expect Chinese encroachments on neighboring countries to resemble the border wars China has initiated against India, the Soviet Union and Vietnam in decades past - a carefully prepared ambush, a limited land grab, followed by calls for a ceasefire, after which the Chinese give up some of their gains (but keep most of it). It's not clear to me that we would intervene to stop such limited clashes, given that we have traditionally not taken a stand on territorial disputes between two friendly (with US, in the narrowest sense, of US not being at war with them) countries. If Saddam had stopped after grabbing the 20% of Kuwait that contained its oil fields, he'd still be in power today, and Kuwait would - like Yemen - be independent, but impoverished.
