Perry selective in remarks to Latinos

Mayor Julián Castro, who preceded Perry as the keynote speaker at the NALEO kickoff luncheon, blasted the governor and the Legislature on such issues as immigration enforcement, education, voter ID and redistricting.

So, what should we know about Perry hating Julián Castro beyond the fact he wants his twin brother Joaquín to be the Gov. of Texas on his way to the White House?

Some history:

"Julián Castro is the son of Rosie Castro, a well-known ’70s firebrand who was among the leaders of La Raza Unida, the radical movement in Texas that was dedicated to defending the civil rights of Mexican-Americans and promoting a strong “Chicano” identity. One of Castro’s first acts as mayor was to hang a 1971 La Raza Unida City Council campaign poster, featuring his mother, in his private office."

Julián Castro seems entirely comfortable expressing views on national and international matters normally outside the purview of first-term mayors. He and his identical twin, Joaquín, are scions of the west-side barrio political machine their mother helped build... In their spare time they accompanied their mother to political events and strategy sessions, where they were exposed to her fiery style of radicalism...; met the key figures in the Chicano political world; became practiced community organizers on political campaigns; and learned to make the system work for them.

For the moment it seems a distant goal. Texas is Republican territory......."

May 27, 2011: After Six-Year Fight, Perry Signs Voter ID into Law

"After six years of fierce partisan battling, the legislative war over voter ID in Texas is officially over.

Gov. Rick Perry signed the voter ID bill into law this morning. The legislation requires voters to present one of five acceptable forms of photo ID—a drivers license, military ID, passport, concealed handgun license or a special voter ID card provided free of charge by the state. Gov. Perry designated voter ID as an “emergency item” early in the session, giving it particular priority as lawmakers rushed it through the legislative process. "This simple action, no more complicated then cashing a check down at the HEB or applying for a library card down the street, will appropriately help maintain the integrity and fairness of our electoral system here in the Lone Star State,” Gov. Perry said at the signing.

More than 30 Republican House members and senators packed the small reception room in the Capitol to witness the event. Gov. Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker of the House Joe Straus heaped praise and thanks on the assembled lawmakers for their hard work. “This is what democracy is all about,” Perry said, acknowledging the crowd.

Democrats, of course, would disagree. For them, this day is a historic loss. Democrats have been fighting voter ID legislation since it was first purposed in 2005, arguing that it would disenfranchise poor and minority voters who traditionally vote Democratic. Republicans argued that voter ID legislation was needed to prevent voter fraud. But Democrats see it as a ploy to give the GOP an edge in elections....."

“Perry has pleased pro-life advocates in Texas many times with signing pro-life legislation — most recently signing an ultrasound bill allowing women to see them before an abortion and hopefully changing their minds on it. He has been strongly supported by pro-life groups. Perry supported or signed into law the Women’s Right to Know Act and the Prenatal Protection Act in 2003, parental consent law in 2005, and funding for alternatives to abortions in 2007 and 2009.”

Yep, just as suspected. Its election time and PRESTO Perry becomes a conservative!! If Perry got the White House the only way we could make sure he governed as a conservative would be to threaten him with an election EVERY year!!

Gov. Perry and The Texas Dream Act [excerpt] It’s important to point out that there is a huge difference in the Texas Dream Act and the The Dream Act that was pushed in Congress and failed. The Dream Act in Congress was full of all kinds of goodies other than allowing children of illegals to receive in state tuition. The Texas Dream Act was focused only on that. I happen to agree with The Texas Dream Act, and so did everyone in the Senate in Texas. It passed with ZERO “no” votes. Add to that, it has been proven to be successful.

These are a few things you need to know about the Texas Dream Act. The child has to have lived in Texas the three years leading up to high school graduation. These students are given no special treatment in getting into Texas colleges and universities. They must get in on their own merit. They are paying the tuition (with or without financial aid). It’s estimated that these students make up about 1% of those entering college.

As I have said many times here, the GOP has long failed to address the illegal immigration issue. It drives me crazy. The GOP has for too long let the most extreme voices in the illegal immigration debate dictate what we DON’T do to solve these problems. [end excerpt]

I didn’t even refer to the “Dream Act”—I simply referred to instate tuition for illegals, which you admit is part of his program.

Though as you add, the instate tuition can also apply to illegals who moved here during high school.

I know who I dont want and that is Perry. His Bush likness alone will give the libs plenty of ammo for the general to keep the focus off of Obamas record. Speaking of Obama, he must be using Perrys playbook. Elections coming and now Obama starts trying to get fuel prices down (even though tapping the reserves is not the correct way to do it) and he is playing politics with our troops of course to help his numbers with the “we need to get out of Afghanistan now” crowd. What blows my mind, like with Perry, people fall for it, hook, line and sinker.

What Perry said here is what we always hear. How about Rick sealing the border and actually following the existing law that has never been tried? And here he calls the people that are disgusted because the laws are not enforced “extreme”. I do not like that at all.

Do you think perhaps these poor kids of illegals could get some in state tuition in Mexico since they are Mexican citizens?

I wonder if I can cross the border with my kids and get in state tuition in Mexico.

The totality of Perry isn’t all bad, but I won’t spend one minute pretending he isn’t another GWB on immigration.

Why? That will not change the facts about Perry. Sure, he is much better than Obama but why just settle for a candidate thar can just beat Obama? Right now, Mickey Mouse could beat Obama, but that dosent mean he should be running the country. Obama has lowered the bar so far, people are willing to vote for anything just to get him out. Bachman has the thinnest resume out there and yet people are falling all over themselves about her. Any other year, before Obama, she wouldnt even register on the radar.

This seems reasonable(Perry's approach) above.

It is a shame that so many Hispanics identify themselves with illegals. The growing Hispanic population in many Western states will make winning the WH a challenge in the future. Republicans need to target them in commercials in Spanish asking them if their lives got better under Obama citing unemployment and prices.

Yes. It’s the “Castro brothers” that blast Perry (mentioned in Post #1) who are the face of the rising Democrat voting block and not the Conservative Hispanics who have and will vote for Perry.
