More than 40 Cleveland police academy cadets have joined the force and will now be immediately laid off because of a budget cut.

The bittersweet ceremony Friday in Cleveland city hall was filled with tears and applause. It marked the end of a one-month reprieve for the cadets.

The city and police union struck a deal in May to allow the 42 cadets to remain in class and graduate as scheduled. That gives them a better chance to find a job by doubling their certification to four years.

The layoffs are among 321 city employees in Cleveland, including 81 police officers. Cleveland officials blame the layoffs on cuts to state aid.

Amid tears and applause, the 42 cadets were let go soon after their graduation ceremony on Friday. According to the Cleveland daily, the city had planned the cut for the end of May, but after striking a deal with the police union the cadets were allowed to take their oaths as scheduled.

By being appointed to active duty, the new officers' certification has been doubled to four years, which means they'll have a better chance to find employment.

The city is laying off 321 employees, including 275 full-time workers. City officials blame the cuts on the expected loss of more than $35 million in state aid, The Plain Dealer reported.

NOTE: Mayor Frank Jackson(D),Cleveland, blames Gov. John Kasich (R), for the layoffs!

Cleveland has been in decline for decades.

Maybe it’s just as well that the uber-Liberal, and demographically declining denomination, United Church of Christ made its headquarters there in the late 1980s.

I’m curious if these new cadets will be forced to join and pay dues to the police union.

Yes, but they have hundreds of millions to spend on light rail. LOL, one screwed up place Cleveland, almost as bad as the cesspool of Cincinnati.

Don't know about Ohio, but CA would go something like this:

They would have to pay the union initiation fee and first month's dues, the they would be certified as being employed 1 or 2 days as required for all the government perks and certifications to kick in to the max allowable. They would get a paycheck for those days and an official "layoff" notice (that's like an honorable discharge) so they can take any Ohio cop job if there is an opening.

But they are officially "not working" so the union will grant a MUCH lower dues rate or waive them entirely until they are again employed as a cop. Then it's back to dues paying normal.
