As I stated on the telephone, this does not mean the site is currently hosting anything malicious or serving as an intermediary for malicious sites; rather, it has done so in the past.

That's the most logical explanation. There's nothing on FR itself that could be considered malware or "dangerous". If someone on FR posts a link to another site that is considered questionable, FR might get blocked.
I don't yet see any evidence of a grand conspiracy here, although I'm willing to be corrected.

Recently I renewed my Kaspersky internet security. I can access FR, but when I attempt to post a comment, I get this message:

It is soooo frustrating. I tried to disable this “Parental Control” and failed. I plan to contact Kaspersky and hopefully get the problem fixed. I have used them for several years and never had this happen before.
Now when I click to “Post” this, I will have to go through the same thing.
I have gotten malware off of links on Drudgereport.com, FR is no different. Its an intermediary that links to the unknown. I am glad the Navy is smart enough to protect its computer systems.
FR seemed to have a virus for a couple of weeks. That might be the reason for the blocking.
It was bad coding, I think.
On the thread pages, just below the article and before the comments, was a link to youtube videos.
On my IE-based browser the coding for that youtube link caused multiple IE windows to open. This did not happen with Firefox.
I noticed in the IE-based browser that multiple different youtube codes would appear. The coding was causing IE to try to load youtube videos with each new link being in a new pop-up.
It acted like a virus, but the problem has stopped. Apparently JohnRob did some recoding and removed the youtube section when the server was down a few days ago.
So far I have had 4-5 friends that have been affected logging on here at FreeRepublic. They found that they now go to FreeRepublic for their news instead of CNN, they question anything written by a liberal on their computer websites , they no longer believe in global warming and refuse to believe anything coming from the MSM. Darn, that virus is nasty!!!!!
It is a pain, you can bet that this is bs.
Just tell them that we host a huge community of ex-military and we use the site to support you and the troops.
If their firewall or software is set up to block blogs, social networking site, or activist sites, you won’t get access to FR. Happened at the last place I worked at, all because some people spent way too much time on facebook at work, on the company computer, when they were supposed to be working.
Interesting, when I left in 2009 FreeRepublic.com was definitely a blocked site. And you may laugh at this one. NASA.GOV was also blocked. If you needed to go there you had to have a authorization given to you by Space Command and my own company.

One should not be trying to access FR while on the job.
Every time I go to the IRS page to get some forms, my firewall and anti-malware software goes nuts. Almost shut down my old computer it was so persistent.

Not very likely. Think of it like a forum participant who displays a pattern of abusive/troll posts on freerepublic.com. They get banned sometimes.
More likely, IA/STIGs/etc are famously set to “one-strike-and-you’re-out” sensitive. Something on freerepublic.com probably ran afoul of the content/malware filter rules on one, single instance and *BAM*, the site was added to a blacklist.
I had a software vendor’s support-page that popped the IA “not authorized” error page (no idea why). I had to fill out a form and state the justification for accessing that page and they allowed it the next day. I don’t know if the reason for the initial block was the same - but I’m fairly certain the “business need” for the access is likely different from reaching freerepublic.com. Point being, if a site is blocked, I know they can be un-blocked. I just don’t know how much success you will have getting freerepublic off the blacklist.
Perhaps some imaginative freeper can suggest a unarguable “need” that the Information Assurance folks will accept?
And to be clear, I get frustrated with the IA folks on almost every project I’m engaged on. Different IA shops seem to interpret STIGs, etc differently. The Navy is particularly famous for nit-picking & requiring more hoop-jumping than all other branches combined (my opinion). I think they should adopt the motto, “Information Assurance: We’re working *HARD* to make sure you can’t!”
